Can someone plz tell me if getting a 2600xt is a good move for my MCPC. Bearing in mind i will be upgrading the machine and when the prices drop it will be connected to a HDTV and a blu-ray/HD-DVD drive will be installed.
Yes, the 2600 is a good choice for a Windows based HTPC.

The 8 pin PCIe connector is for AMD 2900 series cards, actually you can go without the extra 2 pins, but it wont overclock with the driver's built-in tools without 'em.
2600 pro has passive cooling - dunno about the XT but worth checking if noise is an issue. And the 2600 pro handles 1080p no problem on a P4 3Ghz with Vista MCE (as did the 8500GT that preceeded it to be fair).

The gigabyte XT on scan comes with passive so i think i will go with that one

The p4 is actually a 3ghz so thats goodim puttting a gig of ram in there, will that be enough for 1080p? no big deal if its not i guess, wont have a 1080 tv for a while

i knew the 26 didnt need extra 8-pin power sorry i think i worded it badly in the context. What i meant was does it need a 6-pin PCI-E power plug at all?

Easily, even encoding HD video doesn't really use that much memory, it's mostly CPU bound. All HDTV resolution upscaling is done on the GPU, so that's no bother either, if you eventually get a HDTV. You'd only need more if you had lots of TV tuners doing multiple recordings.

I'm running 2GBs on my rig. I haven't measured ram utilisation, but hard to say with Vista anyway. My 2600 Pro is a Gigabyte as well. Connected to the TV via DVI-HDMI adapter as the TV won't give 1080 unless via HDMI. Opened her up yesterday for a bit of maintenance - the 2600 was F-ing hot though. Although the machine has been reliable so far. No additonal power required on the card either.
Mine only has a single Freeview tuner, but worked fine when I had dual analogue tuners originally.
