    Enough power???

    Hi all

I'm looking to upgrade the old graphics soon to 8800 GTX's in SLI and so I am slightly worried about my poor power supply. I'm not sure my Hiper Type R 580W will handle those 2 cards

Will this power supply be able to comfortably run these cards in SLI?

PS anyone know if we are due a new line of cards from nVIDIA? last time I upgraded my graphics card it was obsolete after 3 months

the refresh cards are on the way so best to wait if you can.

With regard to whether you're PSU can hack it.. HELL NO!! lol

I'm suprised it hasn't blown up already

A corsair 620w HX whisper can do it. Most 700 - 800w PSU, are nvidia certified for SLi GTX's

Ideally you'd want you a Corsiar HX620. Although honestly you'd be better off with an 8800Ultra, it'll give you just as good as performance on average and far less hassle. As for upgrade path, the 8800 cards have been out for awhile now, and we're expecting to see some new stuff come along around Christmas time.

Looks like I will need a new PSU then for sure. Any certainty as to the release of these new cards guys?... any specs at all?

    Re: Enough power???

well the GT comes out very soon (some etailers have broken NDA's) which uses the new core I think.

So it shouldn't be long but no certainty on dates afaik.

Yes, and at the same time we should (hopefully) see some vicious price cutting on both camps.

    Re: Enough power???

Xmas is the refresh time for nvidia, so it would be worth waiting until the new stuff comes out, though you may have to wait until january for the high end model.
Reports have said that the new mid range part at mid range prices will be equal to the 8800GTX however. A couple of those in SLI might be the way to go if you can't wait (coming out very soon).
Also nvidia have admitted that ATI's new part is faster than theirs...

This time around, Nvidia did not tout its G92_200 series as the fastest thing since Niki Lauda, but rather admitted defeat in this all-popular synthetic benchmark at the hands of a yet-unnamed Radeon HD part.

Now, I'm not going into the 3DMark debate. Its useful as a stress test, and to benchmark changes in your own system (against itself). But, nvidia admitting that the upcoming ATI part is better is pretty big news in my book.

    Re: Enough power???

I'd be quite impressed if reports that the refresh mid-range cards are (near) equivalent to the 8800GTX turned out to be true. Have we ever had that before?

you do realise you're quoting the computer equivlent to the News of the World don't you? The Inquirer is barely above the level of the kind of supermarket tabloid that quotes "accurate" stories about Elvis being the father of my Love Child!
