I don't mind your opinions, the more the better, but you seem to take the mickey for me giving my opinion that asus and samsung is "fine" for under £20 - that I don't understand. No problems - no offence to you

    Re: Best value DVD-RW

I would also suggest going to cdfreaks or cdrlabs if you want to check the latest on DVD-RW. If Pioneer/Sony+NEC are 'industry standard', I would at best consider them the Intel of the DVD-RW market. Intel has made good chips in the past and currently, but there are times where they are not at the their games eithe. But going back to what I've said, I doubt there is that much difference between the brands. But I am going with peterb that if game loading time is a priority, it is so much better to just do a full install.

    Re: Best value DVD-RW

I wasn't suggesting that there is anything wrong with Sammys / ASUS drives, but that the NEC/ big P has a huge following with plenty of on-line support (and hacked firmwares, which is a big plus for enthusiasts).
As with all computer products, don't purely go on brand, go on model.

But anyway, with a tech as old as DVD's, they are all that mature now that there isn't going to be a huge difference between any of them.

Going model by model, I would go for the Samsung SH-S203B if I was to buy a DVD-RW today.

    Re: Best value DVD-RW

They're pretty much all as good as each other now anyway. It's such a mature market. I normally just buy the cheapest. Other than Optiarc - bought 1 last week, and bloody hell it's loud when reading CDs. Samsung are generally the cheapest along with Optiarc, so I stick to buying them. Bought a few SH-S203s recently, and I can't see how to improve them. It's just such an old market that there's little to differentiate between them all. Wish someone would do something with the bezels though - they're all just exactly the same. Need a Pioneer DVR-A09XL to come along - now that was a funky bezel. Not in a hurry to buy another Pioneer or NEC though - had a couple fail on me in the past year, so they get bumped down the list a notch.

Go with the Samsung S203B, great burner.

The new LiteOn 20A3P is worth a look too.
