    Re: What Gaming Laptop????

i agree that SG01 and SG03 limits the HSF...effectively you need to buy their combo (i.e. short cable PSU, NT06 cooler and SG01/03)...this setup should be fine for C2D systems...maybe not for Quads though...

a step up would be the TJ08 which i agree is really good - two 120 fans - great cooling, low noise...!

Thanks for all the great feedback keep it coming!

I have been drooling over the P182 staffsMike cheers! The Lian-Li V and the SG's are also interesting.

At this point I have to mention the fact that I haven't built a PC from scratch before but I am definitely looking forward to it now. Are there any really good guides for the build process?

Why all intel I had heard AMD were the gaming cpu's not so?

Yeah, if it doesn't fit, don't push harder
Seriously though, it's pretty much straight forward, all the wires and cards only go in a certain socket/slow, so if it doesn't slip right in with a little effort, don't force it. If in doubt, Read The Friendly Manual.

Once upon a time, AMD is still ok at the budget end, but Intel has the raw performance crown, and they don't seem set on losing it.

    Re: What Gaming Laptop????

I'm eagerly awaiting (for almost certain certain dissapointment) for the new amd quad cores to be released next month. they sound good enough on paper, whether they can match intel only time will tell.

With regard to the build, first of all the P182 is probably the easiest case's to get to grips with and it comes with a very good manual to help you build everything into it. If you do go for it I really would suggest a modular power supply (as i recommended before) it makes life a lot easier with that case.

the only difficult part is the HSF if you are going the aftermarket route. If you do get the scythe ninja, make sure you fit it while the motherboard is outside of the case or you will shred your hands and it wont be on properly. Also make sure you read the arctic silver guide on their web site about how to apply the grease to the cpu. Other than it's very easy. Take your time and have fun doing it

    Re: What Gaming Laptop????

Thanks for your responses ackrite26, staffsmike, aidanjt, plenty of information to digest!

As far as future upgrade potential which of these boards is best?

    Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

    or

    Asus P5E iX38, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066/1200/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

Also ackrite26 didn't mention any HSF in the spec, why was that?

    Of these two?

    Scythe Infinity/Mugen CPU Cooler

    or

    scythe ninja rev B HSF

    Re: What Gaming Laptop????

I havnt got round to reading reviews of the x38 boards yet but they are better in terms of future upgrades.

PCIe 2.0 and 1600mhz FSB will be useful.. but whether the boards are any good I don't know.

Last time we got an "overclocking" chipset from intel, it was worse than the standard chipset.

About the same, Intel's next generation of CPU will have a completely different system architecture, so No current motherboards will be able to use it. Future proofing is an oxymoron in the computing industry. I picked the IP35 Pro because it's proven, has a nice digital PWM, has a good layout, and performs well.

The Scythe Infinity runs slightly cooler, if you are to believe reviewers (it keeps my E6320 very chilly anyway), and fits in Lian-Li Vxxxx series cases. But it's *big* so you'll need to fit it to the motherboard, before inserting the motherboard into the case. Also make sure you fit the RAM first as well, otherwise it could be a tight fit. I had to shove the fan way up to get the first memory module to sit in the DIMM slot. Speaking of heatsinks, don't forget to throw in some Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) to use as a Thermal Interface Material, there's plenty of discussion around here as to how to apply it, personally I use the spread method.

Use Coollaboratory Liquid Pro, it has better results than Arctic Silver 5

    Yeah, sounds great.

I'd rather stick to something that's safe and proven, rather than something that will make my aluminium parts melt or combust. Thanks all the same.

TBH I use Arctic Cooling's MX-2 so really I should recommend that. better than AS5 once cured.
