Any S939 experts out there?

Well, my grand plan to go Core 2 Duo has gone a little tits up as money's a bit tighter than I thought. Ah, well.

So... I can get a AMD64 x2 3800 for £60.

I currently have a single core AMD64 4000+.

Any point going dualcore for what, from the name alone, appears to be a slower processor? (leaving aside OC'ing issues)

You could pick up a 4200 X2 939 for £44.64 from Scan, not in stock at the moment though!

Yeah, I've just found that on yoyo as well. I'm surprised: I thought that above 4000 they ran into £100 plus.

So what do you reckon? It's for a Vista system, so I'm thinking it'll be worthwhile.

Definitely. The dual core chips do make a real difference in terms of how snappy windows feels and when multi tasking.

If you're planning on overclocking, my 4200 from Scan is stable at 3Ghz, not a bad overclock really. Gives me plenty of power.

Most 4200's go to 2.6Ghz+

[Tempt kalniel] My X2 4200+ from scan is sitting on 2.75G at 1.375V 36 Deg idle [Temp=off]

It does seem to get a little hot at 2.75, I find; like, 65 degrees under load. With a big zalman jobbie on it.

I have currently have an S939 motherboard (Asus A8V-E Deluxe). It has a VIA chipset and it does not support dual-core CPUs. Check with your mobo manufacturer if yours does.

I'm talking from knowlodge of C2D's here, but i think you're alright to go up to about 80c before it starts crisping you hardware. 65c isn't too bad under load. I wouldn't go any higher though.

Are you running Orthos on both cores and checking the temperature after about 2 minutes? If you're at 65c and it's not rising, i wouldn't worry. Orthos whips your machine harder than it'll probably ever need to work.

Unfortunately C2D doesn't read over to S939. 65C is getting to the upper design limits TBH.

To the OP, the benefits of x2 really depend on what you plan on doing with the PC. Many folks report an improvement, others report none - really horses for courses.

I was t'OP. Dual core made a great dif. I might turn it down a wee smidge. Hit's about 65 when playing gears of war and hellgate.
