Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

I have a EVGA 8800GTX, although i haven't yet started this PC up waiting on a part....

But EVGA have their step-up program if nvidia bring out a new card within 90 days then you only pay the difference in price from what you paid for the GTX/Ultra.

They are all pretty much the same and I believe they all pretty much come off the same production line.

going for the evga would seem a bit more sensible in my case, especially due to the step-up program and long warranty

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

I'm not sure the EVGA Step Up program is available to those of us in Europe by the way. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall it being for people in North America only.

And yeah, like somebody said, they are all made in the same factories and then just a different sticker is put on each one. So the only difference between brands is the sticker, the software they choose to put with it, and any overclocking differences.

And so the sticker is not worth thinking about, and the software is pretty pointless because we all get our drivers from the same place anyway (nvidia.com), so unless you see one with a game you particularly want, then I would just go with whichever is the cheapest brand. And just double check it has the same clock speed as the others, and that there isn't one with much higher clock for not much more £££.

The eVGA step up program does work in Europe. I would try and find the sweet spot between price and warranty.

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

Theyre all reference boards anways - only difference is the sticker on the cooler and warranty....so find a nice price and figure how long you'l keep the card for... I went for cheaper card with 2 year warranty, as the chances of me having the same gpu is 2 years time is pretty slim.....

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

If thats true about the EVGA step up program working in Europe, then you could do a lot worse than going with that option - depending how much the EVGA cards cost compared to the others.

But if they are all a similar price, then its worth it. That step up program is great. I wish I had that. I couldn't ignore the fact that some brands where about £50 cheaper though, when I bought mine.

EVGA are perhaps the only people who make non-referenace 8800GTX, with their different brand of cooler they slap on.

Whether it makes a difference however

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

Personally I don't see the point in the 'step up' program. Either you buy the card you need, or you don't. You shouldn't need to upgrade your card within 3 months of purchase.

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

Had a BFG GTX and upgraded to an EVGA ultra.

After most of my previous cards being XFX, and having actually used their warranty services, i would never ever buy an XFX product again. All the times i have sent items back, they have taken over a month to get back to me, not impressed.

BFG motherboard too, that too 4 days from start to finish on the warranty return. Lifetime warranty.

EVGA's warranty also covers overclocking and removal of the heatsink/fan, and last's 10 years.

BFG or EVGA purely on their tech supprt and warranty terms.

Re: Calling all 8800 GTX/Ultra owners

Ewww 3 months isn't too good. I was sure it used to be longer than that.

Its still probably worth it though. You could get an 8800GTX now, and then you might be able to upgrade to the 8900GTX in a couple of months, or a higher clocked version. Either way, its better than nothing. The rest of us have it for good and thats it. The only we can get an upgrade, is to flog it and buy another.

Actually, the warrenty/support would make a big difference to my choice, based on what V|per said above. I don't have water cooling anyway, but if I did... it would be nice to know that I am not voiding my 8800GTX's warrenty by fitting the water cooler to it. Because most manufacturers will consider the warrenty void when you do that.

Asus. Decent price, don't tamper with the design, a high quality name, and you get S.T.A.L.K.E.R for free with the ultra.
