Which Ram for Q6600

Ok decided to build myself a new computer as it's my birthday soon, consisting of a Q6600 CPU and i will probably get the ASUS P5K-E motherboard unless anyone else has any other recomendations.

But want to order the RAM tonight as it's on Special offer, I don't know if i should get the Geil or The Crucial Balistix RAM, not had the time to read up properly as i literly decided today. I want to overclock my system as much as possible so am i right in guessing the Balistix will allow me to do that with the RAM at 1.1 or will they both do that.

Yea i think i got it from your link in another post? Will i be able to do 1.1 upto 3Ghz though with this RAM?

Or can you run them on a lower divider to get a higher clock speed?

I've got the GeIL, was a bit more expensive when I got it. It's very overclockable but not at those timings. You'd have to down the timings to 5-5-5-15 or more.

Ok i'm sold at that price i really can't go wrong anyway.

Is the motherboard a good choice then?

Going to get a Corsair 520 PSU i think not sure now on a graphics card was going to get the ATI 1950 pro as a stop gap but might get one of the Nvida 8800GT's when they come out or maybe another ATI.

Will that PSU run my system fine? will be using a DVD writer and 2 hard drives and thats about it.

That PSU is perfect

The geil will run a q6600 3.6 1:1 without overclocking the RAM and it overclocks really well anyway so it's more than you'll ever need

Just reading through clunks quad overclocking thread and it's got me all worried that it's all going to be too hot without using watercooling.

Do the GO ones run much cooler? Was going to order from scan tonight though not decided on a heatsink and fan for it,

the G0 certainly does run a LOT cooler. The B3 i had with a scythe ninja ran mid 30 degrees idle (50's under load) at stock settings. But most G0's can be overclocked to 3.4GHz without any issue what so ever.

Scythe ninja is my HSF of choice but the thermalright Extreme 120, tuniq towner, scythe infinity.. are all good choices.

Thanks i will check out reviews for all of those, i usually go for the easiest to to install, bit of a chicken when it comes to heatsink installation.

If i go for the corsair 520 will there be much room for upgrades in the future? I'm uming and ahhing over this or the 620. I see alot of you guys have 700w or above PSU's so it makes me wonder?

Having said that i plan to run the system for at least a year without upgrades. I hope but you never know.

700w was a bit of an oversight on my part

i've built a q6600 with 4gb of ram and an 8800GTS with the 520w model. No problem for it what so ever.

It will take a GTX or Ultra too.

the ninja uses the intel push pin design to fit, but it easiest fit with the mobo out as it takes some force to get it on.

Yeah, the push pin is pretty rubbish tbh.. It's a flimsy fit, a struggle to get them on right, and put far too much pressure on the mounting points. We'd be better off with a rear retention bracket attaching directly to the HSF to keep the thing clamped against the CPU, instead of warping the motherboard with excessive pressure...

the scythe mine is a lot light than the ninja which might be a better compromise but.. the ninja isn't that heavy and i've had no problem with the two i've fitted. Both secure and no flexing of the mobo.

The basic gist is that Corsair rate their PSU wattages at 50 degrees, whereas other manufacturers may rate theirs when they're running at 40 degrees. What the rep was saying is that if they rated their PSU's this way, the 620W would be closer to a 720W unit.

Cheers guys, i've ordered the RAM and i'm about to order the motherboard CPU and PSU From scan.

Just gotta find a case i like the look of with good cooling, was looking at the Antec 900 but saw how heavy it was and that put me right of.

They are heavy but like the P182 they are amazingly quiet and cool.

A nice aluminium case is the akasa eclipse 62/ mirage (same thing different front)

Thats what I use but i prefer the P182.
