Use this to decide whether you want Vista Business

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ns/choose.mspx

TBH if you don't mind learning a new OS, it's worthwhile getting Vista as it gives DX10 which the newer games will start using. However as I said, you can upgrade to Ultimate edition via a link on the desktop if you want the missing features.

games wise - really depends on what game you are playing...if it is dx10...it will be hard to play but should be "manageable" if you lower lots of the settings (only top end desktop systems can play dx10 games at the moment in nice modes)

as for haggling, try to make them reduce the price, and then get some upgrades for free (e.g. 2gb ram, better hard disk, webcam, business vista, or etc)

if the person you talk to does not want to haggle, hang up and try again with someone who does (although obviously you will waste telephone call costs but use 01 number to minimise)

sooooo should I try get the Hdd upped to 7200rpm and the cpu to the 2.2 instead of the stock 2ghz... and the battery etc and be like well I've been interested in one with those specifications for what I require tbh... what kind of reducations do you think I'll be getting.would it be too much to think I'd get a 100quid off for example.

folllowing what you said about vista... I've used ultimate and It was nice... some apps wouldn't run like some xbox stuff I use for my modded xbox (oh noes illegalllllityyyy lol!)
but I could find ways around it. or use the other xp box in the house I guess...
Regards to DX10 games do you think the above setup will be rubbish for it then? what is better DX9 with high settings or DX10 at lower.what are the differences between the 2? got a comparison screenshot on a game?

cheers for all your input guys.

When it comes to DX10, games run slightly slower but there's often more detail that gets added to them. Best part is, you can do both without any problems since DX10 is backwards compatable and many games that feature DX10 support often have it as an option

Re: Help me out... new lappy... £800? maybe more.

You will only get the DX10 shiny features in games designed to know about DX10, I'm afraid.

You guys are making me regret ordering a Vostro 1500, what with the 1700 only costing £40 more Ah well, we settled on the 15.4" models as we wanted actually portable notebooks, and a smaller screen will probably eat slightly less battery

When it comes to haggling with Dell, I believe I managed to figure it out when on the phone to them lacing our order. Their computer systems allow them to give free delivery and around 10% off, and one of the two is always included. They can then include the other if you try and haggle. More still might be possible, but it means waiting longer to get your hands on your notebook, letting them phone you back in a few days. Frankly the value with the two standard gifts is absurd, so we just went with that.

Yes, Vista uses DX10 which is capable of running DX9 games quite happily. You don't see any changes in DX9 games though as they have to be programed specifically to use the bonus bits of DX10.

All in all, it's a moot point really, the newer OS saves upgrading when you finally do find something that'll only run on it, the older one brings familiarity.

Re: Help me out... new lappy... £800? maybe more.

hmmm well seeing as I'll be using it for gaming would it be better off to save system resources and get more fps by haggling for xp and some cash off? cause tbh xp pro sp2 gives me better compatibility with 3rd party apps that I'd like to keep... having had problems running vista with them previously...
lol so how much is 10% off a 873quid order and free delivery is what 50/60quid off aswell?

Re: Help me out... new lappy... £800? maybe more.

thanks guys i bloody hope so! LOL i NEED all the help i can get haha ... overdraft... thanks ex... but yeah lets not start that!
I'm well temped to go higher spec now but hmmm not sure. I Don't think there's any better graphics card i can bargain with...
EDIT: as for the screen size this is more a desktop replacement that I will be using when seeing nearby family... I run a 19" dell monitor @ 1600x1200 so nearest i can get to that is a must!
as far as portability is concerned its not an issues for me.lol the biggest screen pos/res is! plus i think a 13" would kill my eyes and i'd have such a cluttered desktop as i multitask to a bitch lollll.

through out the duration of this post you've changed your requirements a few times.

Please state your overall requirments in order of priority

    For example.

    1.) games
    2.) dvd / movie work
    3.) web surfing

When you started this thread it was for "applications" and you "may" get into some games, as the posts go down it appears that all you are interested in as a primary function is games.

Re-asses what you want and inform the thread of your requirments.
    It is Inevitable.....
