Anyone know where a good $40 (USD) PSU is?

I'm looking for a new $40 and under PSU if anyone knows any good name brands for that price or anything?

    Thanks.

IMHO (and most others) Antec are tops and for $45 you can get the 350W version, that's easily better than most other 400W PSUs. Enermax are also another top PSU manu and you can get their 350W for $45 too. Sparkle are among the decent alternatives and their 350W is $38. Vantec and Thermaltake are also pretty popular and way better than generic PSUs, they come in at $59 for Vantec 400W and then $38 and $43 for TT 360W & 420W. I'd suggest the Sparkle if that budget's very tight otherwise the Antec with the Enermax a close runner up.

oooooo... I was just looking and I found this. Is this any good?

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...tby=14&order=1

The second one from top. If that doesnt work its this...

Thermaltake Silent PurePower, 420W ATX power supply. UL, CSA, TUV, CE Approved. Intel Pentium 4 Compliant.

Oh and that still works fine with my AMD Athlon 2400xp right?

Well it's all to do with how well it keeps to it's rails' spec. Even though it may just be a 50w increase, it also counts highly that it is a well trusted manufacturer and the quality of components will be higher.

I've only got a 350w Antec PSU and I've had no problems with it at all.

Having a P4 ready PSU simply means it has the added cables for connecting to P4 style mobos, the PSU will still work in other cases.

In terms of a branded 350W beating a generic 400W the simple fact is that there's a lot more to a PSU than the Wattage, just like there's more to a CPU than it's mhz/ghz and more to a gfx card than its core speed or DX generation. Without getting too intense about it all the generic and even cheap end PSUs tend to be somewhat overly optimistic with their ratings and if they do quality test them then it's only likely to be for a very short period of time. Think of it as some manu's quoting speakers in PMPO and others in the meaningful RMS.

Regarding how much Wattage is enough it depends upon what you will be running during the PSU's life. Basicly almost all the average users will find a well branded 300-350W enough but 350-400W gives that little more future-proofing and helps to alleviate any problems which may arise from running the PSU too near its maximum. If you may get into multiple IDE (eg. RAID), dual CPUs or high end gfx cards if not some in combination then it makes a lot more sense to get a generous PSU from a good manu.

That 420W TT should easily be plenty fine, esp as other manus seem to take a fair price jump after 350W. AthlonXP2400+ is TbredB and not that power hungry, even an XP3200+ in itself wouldn't warrant a large PSU. HTH!
