a - 1. having to keep setting the time
2. having a bios warning about default settings
3. clock running backwards ( ok this happened to me once )
b - 1. smoke coming out of the back of your pc ( not much of a warning realy )
2. PC shuts down like you have pulled the plug
3. problems getting to post
4. unstable pc
thats my experiance
Agree with what's been posted above but just to add/elaborate (PSU) - PC comes to life for a few seconds - fans spin and then shuts down.
My BIOS battery's been dead for aaaaages, and I've not been bothered to change it. It doesn't affect the normal working of the PC, but if I disconnect the mains I have to reset the BIOS settings when I next power it up - not enough of an annoyance to make me remember to buy a battery.
Should those batteries need to be replaced often? Can't say I've ever known of one go.

I've been using PCs since the Early 90s and have never heard of one go up to this point, I guess it would happen if either the battery/mobo was defective or if it was left stood for a long time.
