E6850 vs Q6600

Hey,

Quick question, both the E6850 and Q6600 are at £170 at Scan. What should I be buying? Don't really play that many games and do a fair amount of extracting files and handling data. But the E6850 is 3GHz x2 and the Q6600 is 2.4GHz x4...

Intresting........never thought of a xeon as an option is this chip better than Q6600 it seems to have 8meg cache.

Isn't there a difference in the instruction set between the Q6600 and the Xeon equivilent? Also, don't you need to get ECC RAM when pairing up with a server processor?

No I think you can still use normal DDR2 on that Xeon.

the only differences I can tell from looking at the intel spec sheets is a higher thermal specification (85 deg C vs 71), and narrower core voltage (1.1-1.372v vs 0.85 - 1.5v) for the xeon compared to the q6600.

From what I have read elsewhere the only difference is that the xeon has better quality silicone hence the higher thermal specs.

The Xeons are just the like normal Quads, I have a Q6600 and an X3210. They are 100% interchangeable.

Next question £170 for Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz or £320 for Q6700 @ 2.66GHz. Price hike seems fairly huge for the small improvement. I'm guessing either will feel like lightening compared to my X2 4800 from nearly 3yrs ago!

I will never understand why some would be willing to pay nearly double the price for a 200mhz difference in speed, it boggles one's mind.
