    New PC Spec Up

    Hey All

I might be building a new PC for the family soon so have put a little Spec together.

This is just the key components that the PC will need excluding CD Drive.

They have a pretty much brand new Keyboard, monitor and mouse.

I was wondering what people thought to the Spec.

The PC is used for browsing the net as well as playing games such as Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, Rome Total War etc etc etc.

Oh and can someone explain to me what the CAS timings on RAM actually mean :S

    Thanks in advance.

The Price for this is just about £500 i think, i think that is about as high as the family are willing to go.

    Re: New PC Spec Up

swap the HDD for a samsung spinpoint for some quiet gaming

CAS is latency for memory - i.e. the lower the better

    Re: New PC Spec Up

Whats the purpose of the machine? Gaming, internet etc? This is key to deciding components.

    Initial thougts are:
    - 8600GTS cards a very over priced given their performance, usually not to dissimilar to the 320mb 8800GTS'
    - 520w PSU a bit over the top for that machine. At least consider the VX model
    - Go for cheaper, slower RAM, no need for 6400

In simple terms, the lower the CAS, the better. It all relates to latency, so the lower the latency, the faster the data moves.

Lol, love it when people quote the entire first post, when they're the second poster

    Re: New PC Spec Up

    lol thanks to both above.

I see what you mean about the gfx card, this is am sticking to a budget but like you have said, just reducing the RAM for a start and possibly the PSU will save me enough money to buy the 8800GTS card.

As for HD, I have a samsung in my PC and I am very happy with it but for the family PC as its not going to be used for gaming as a priority then I dont think there is much need for a really quiet drive.

    Re: New PC Spec Up

oh, i didn't see you wanted the 512mb version - s_kinton is right!

just buy the 256mb version is fine if you go 8600GTS the extra 256mb really isn't that useful! spend the money for a bigger CPU
