    PSU Just Exploded

    Hiya,

My expensive (£50 / 430W) Tagan PSU just blew up in my other PC with a VERY loud "pop" noise, and stunk the room out of plastic fumes. I took the DVD Writer out of it and put it in this computer and it is still working, but is it possible that the other parts of the computer e.g. motherboard are broken? The Tagan PSU comes with a 3 year warranty. If they are, is Tagan going to be liable for the cost of these parts? If they aren't, are there any PSU manufacturers that provide this kind of guarantee with their products?

    Thanks,

    ta2

don't think anyone will offer you compensation for other components..not sure though.

Tagan are normally pretty good so I would think that the rest of your components are ok. Only way to know for sure is check them in another PC.

    Re: PSU Just Exploded

Unlikely its taken anything else with it. The higher end makers have things in place to stop it (usually an internal fuse, for a start ).
Although you will only know when you test them.

No matter what brand, some things always fail. Thankfully Tagan are good at RMA's (its Nanopoint who you want to speak to if its over a year old, otherwise where you brought it from).

Were you suing a surge protector? In my experience most issues are caused by the power its being fed.

how odd. Tagan are very good! What did you have running on it?

I think the rest of your stuff should be fine.

    Re: PSU Just Exploded

I am baffled by why it screwed up, it's a 430W PSU, about 18 months old. Heres what it was running:

    Athlon 64 3700+ (S939)
    2x 1GB Corsair Value Select
    Zalman all copper fan
    ASUS Mobo
    7900GT
    8x Pioneer DVDRW
    Sony Floppy drive
    2x 160GB Seagate SATA (7200rpm)
    1x 120mm case fan

I wouldn't have thought this would use more than 300W at most, and when it exploded, it was totally idle. Also, what do you mean by this Agent "its Nanopoint who you want to speak to if its over a year old"?

    Cheers

Also yeah it was powered by a surge protector, and additionally the IEC power cable supplied with the PSU is fitted with a 13A fuse, which again, should have blown before the PSU did.

    Re: PSU Just Exploded

Everything can be faulty at some point, its just the way things work

My comment: After a year, you RMA it directly to Nanopoint, who deal with Tagan RMA's in the UK.
Most places you buy from will shrug you off after a year, although the legality of this depends on the situation, Nanopoint are good from what i've heard

Thanks, I just filled out the RMA procedure on that website. But I would like to know one thing, how was I supposed to know to go there if you hadn't let me know? Also I find it strange that http://www.tagan.co.uk is a redirect to http://www.scan.co.uk hmmm...

When you (if) fill in the form at http://www.tagan.com/ they will email you back with those instructions.

And yes, very cheeky of Scan indeed!

    Re: PSU Just Exploded

I've had both Antec and Enermax fail on me before, even with a surge adapter. So it happens. So it happens. That said, neither took any part of my PC with them.

Yesterday was Friday - depending on what time you did it they may not have got to your message.
They won't work over the weekend
