    Hosting a Counter strike server

    Hey,

I was just wondering what sort of specs would be needed to host a server for CS:S.

My mate wants to host one for his clan, and he needs to know the reccomended specs for a 100 tick server.

Also, how much does internet speed come into play?

    Thanks

    Nick

Re: Hosting a Counter strike server

I wouldn't have thought you need anything too meaty for a small server. How many people were you thinking?

I'd have though a cheap amd X2 1 or 2gb of RAM would be fine for a small server. anything over 16 people i'm not too sure.

Re: Hosting a Counter strike server

    this is a tough one

100 tick 20 slot server may need a P4 2.8 with a gig of ram as 100 tick can be quite demanding, a dedicated CS:S server can be run on Linux so pick your distro...

the real issue you have here is bandwith, what are you using to host it? or is it for a LAN?

Any machine in the last 5 years will run a CS:S server, Debian is usually the best pick for server boxes.

Re: Hosting a Counter strike server

I agree with the above on Debian, thats what we ran our servers with. The only problem is that the counterstrike source server software can't handle 100 tick properly and whats the point of a 100 tick server when no one can get 100fps constant?

I would go for a 66 tick or even 75 but after years of messing with servers I can honestly say the best hit reg I have found is on 33 tick as that is what the game was designed to run at.

I know I will get loads of people saying "no your wrong" etc but I have had a lot of experience with CS:S servers as well as DOD:S etc.

I didn't know what Jay Oasis just said but linux is normally favoured and debian seems the most popular.

Re: Hosting a Counter strike server

sorry, can I ask again. What kind of upload speed will he have?

If he has less than 2.5mb upload (not download) then I would say no way at 100tick

if he has maybe 1 to 1.5mb up then yes maybe for a 33tick but due to it being a home connection pings will be bad. Look at getting a 16man 33 tick server they are really cheap these days.

I would of thought you would an SDSL line to run a 20 man server..

    They don't come cheap

It's all about the connectivity, you just can't do it with a home connection really. Much better off renting one especially if you care about performance.

Re: Hosting a Counter strike server

If you were thinking about building a server anyway you may be better of just co-locating it in a datacenter..

From as far as i know it's a bit pricey though..

BE has a fair chunk of upstream bandwidth, with a decent quality router with QoS, it would do the job no problem. It's not exactly a big ass file mirror he's hosting here.
