Ditching the 939 4800+ for the E6600? A few Q's!

    Hey guys

An opportunity has arisen whereby i can switch my 4800+ and 939 board and something newer. Ive been looking at the massive overclocks offered by the E6600 predominately, so i think i will go for one of those and perhaps a ThermalTake BigTyp 120 VX for cooling. I saw they can get to 3.6ghz with ease, and some guys have even done over the 100% OC with them, although i shant be looking to cool my pc with LN just yet I was thinking possibly about the intel quads of current, although they run too damn hot for a good OC i believe. Im not in a position to wait for the new cooler 08 batch either unfortunuately

My question is, good choice? Ive noticed that as the 4800+ 939 was the highest offered at the time, they are selling for a pretty penny second hand on the bay of evil (going up to around £160ish in some cases). I cannot get this chip to overclock for crap, yet the old venice 3000+ in my board went like a rocket after a little fsb bump.

I am on a budget, so i dont want to go too far, but i know i will need a reasonably good motherbaord, psu and ram as opposed to the poorer ones as they are not quite so good with a bit of overclocking!

Any suggestions here? I normally go with the real cheap stuff, and never get too many problems....

(i will be buying from scan, so feel free to link onto there! )

Cheers, and many thanks for your help in advance!

E6600 is slightly older now. The E6750 is probably the better chip to go with these days.

3.6Ghz is normally the limits of these things with big coolers mine sits at 3.4Ghz on an arctic freezer pro though so 3.6ghz is probably attainable for me.

If you're on a budget the Abit IP-35 is a fantastic board.

Corsair ram is nice and stable...and all you'll get from scan

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=402849 - you would get better stuff for around £45 elsewhere though.

That was speedy mike! Will the 6750 OC more though is the question? I was looking at 6850 i think, but it didnt go as high as the 6600?

    cheers fella

it's essentially the same chip I think.

The E6600 will be easier on the motherboard as the FSB is lower to start with.

But the E6750's seem to do very well to so i'm guessing there won't be much in it..and it's a bit cheaper.

Aye, i noticed that! Theyve got some interesting pricing going on, the E6600 @ 2.4 £136 ,and the E6750 2.66 at £117! Know any more about that? Just factory clocking i guess.

tbh this is the one that's caught my eye.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=632058

should be a tidy little performer and overclocker.

then of course theres the pentium dual core's which seem to do 100% overclocks to over 3.0Ghz

Looks interesting indeed. A lot lot cheaper, i shall investigate its potential!

Has it only just come out?

yeah should be with them very soon. Look for reviews on the E4500 if you want to find out about it. It's near enough to that to make no difference.

    Re: Ditching the 939 4800+ for the E6600? A few Q's!

I would consider saving up another pay cheque or something and then getting the Q6600. Its not a big deal though. But I just know that if I was going to go through the overclocking process, I would rather do that knowing I end up with a super fast quad core at the end of it, rather than a super fast dual core. It might not make much difference now, but in 6 months and beyond, it could be a big deal.

I suppose it depends on whether you would be happy to upgrade again or not. Personally I rather spend a bit more and then just ride it out as long as possible. You can evidently get that Q6600 delivered to you for about £160 total. Its not exactly cheap, but its decent value considering how fast that thing is.
