Abit IP35 memory config..
Morning,
I recently purchased an Abit IP35 board (Not version E or Pro) and would like some advice on the memory configuration. On a previous board that failed (ASUS P5k) the memory in question had a Vista performance score of 5.8 yet at the moment the memory score is 4.8.
The memory in question is Geil Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel memory kit (4 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12). In the BIOS i have set the voltage to 2.1v and timings to 4-4-4-12 as per the memory sticker and instructions enclosed.
CPUZ reports the following on the memory:
Chipset & Memory
Northbridge Intel P35/G33/G31 rev. A2
Southbridge Intel 82801IR (ICH9R) rev. 02
Graphic Interface PCI-Express
PCI-E Link Width x16
PCI-E Max Link Width x16
Memory Type DDR2
Memory Size 4096 MBytes
Memory Frequency 408.0 MHz (1:2)
CAS# Latency (tCL) 4.0 clocks
RAS# to CAS# (tRCD) 4 clocks
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 4 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) 12 clocks
Command Rate (CR) 2T
Memory SPD
Module 1 DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, GEIL
Module 2 DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, GEIL
Module 3 DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, GEIL
Module 4 DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, GEIL
Just wondering if I am missing something in regards to the ratio or something? currently (1:2)
Thanks
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
To me it looks like your got your memory running at 50% of the 'stock' value
1:2 would suggest your memory is running at 50% of your fsb, I have 2GB of the same ram, and run my ratio at 5:4 meaning the memory is clocked higher than the fsb (I won't go into the reasoning behind that!)
I believed (someone correct me if I'm wrong), that the first number is the ram and the second the fsb so really you would want 1:1 which would bung your memory up to 800Mhz (ish) which shouldn't really cause any issues since at stock it should run at 800.
Sorry for sloppy explanation! but does that help?
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
2:3 is the ratio for 800Mhz. I have the same memory running on a QuadGT so the bios is more or less the same.
If you decide to OC drop it to 1:1 this will drop the speed to 533 but obviously as you increase the CPU speed it will increase the speed of the ram.
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
Surely there is no ratio for 800Mhz unless you know what your FSB is running at.
Wouldn't 2:3 only = 800Mhz if your FSB is at 266Mhz?
His memory is running at 400Mhz using 1:2 which suggests his FSB is actually at 200.
My knowledge on this is a bit fuzzy, so I may be wrong!
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
Certainly would be useful to know if everything other than the mobo is identical to his previous setup & also exactly which CPU he has.
abit's typically run ~2% overclock out of the box so it does look like his CPU is running ~204fsb.
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
This is the complete CPUZ report. Just reading it and have noticed that the multiplier is x6 when it should be x10 and a Core Speed of 1224.0 MHz when it should be 2000ish Ghz. Not right.
Went back onto CPUZ and the reading flicks between 6x and 10x. I think something is not right!

Sounds like you've got speedstep or something like cool n quiet enabled in the BIOS. This will downclock the CPU to keep it cooler and save power.
Re: Abit IP35 memory config..
Im running an arctic pro 7 fan rather than the usual stock one. Average around 30c so cant think its temp related. Power it could be. Will check it out tonight.

C1E & EIST probably enabled.
