    Re: New HardDisk?

I use Samsung myself - not had any problems. If you want ultra reliable then buy an enterprise grade disk, but they are about twice the price of a normal desk top/home use device, so probably isn't worth it for your requirements.

    Re: New HardDisk?

    Hey Craig,

Those samsung spinpoints are great drives... I have built a few rigs with them and they are exceptionally quiet!

My other favorite drive to use is the Western Digital SE16 drives... they score 5.9 on the vista performance index and, although are a bit noisier than the spinpoints, they are still very quiet (almost inaudible in my case and I have 4 in Raid 0).
    (Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB )

Id say stick with the spinpoint if you want silence and good performance or go for a western digital SE16 if you dont mind a bit of noise but want the fastest SATA 7200rpm drive in its class.

    Re: New HardDisk?

from personal experience...seagates are noisy drives ....
Me I use my pc for audio recording aswell... so the ticking over of the drives picks up on the mic's and seagates were the worst offenders ive used.

Also, I have never had a Western Digital drive fail on me before... and 2 seagates have bitten the dust...

    just unlucky i guess

    Re: New HardDisk?

Macuser did a review on 500gb Drives. They tested Hitachi, Segate, Samsung and a couple of WD drives. Samsung had the fastest Sequential Write speed, but had the slowest Sequential Read.....

The best all round drive was the WD RAID edition WD5000 ( came a close 2nd to Samsung in the Seq' read)
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

I've done a lot of research into this drive and it has the best all round performance of any drive in this category!

    Hope this helps

    Darren

    Re: New HardDisk?

For every person that has had a seagate die on them, there will be another who swears by them and has had a WD die.

That's something I have learnt about hard drives. There is no clear "better" manufacturer.....There is occasionally a bad manufacturer though, for me at the moment it is Maxtor......

Mechanical parts fail, that is life. Roll-on affordable solid-state drives

    Absolutely right.....

I deal with 100's of drives and the only two manufactures that haven't failed me are Samsung and Seagate. Only had one WD fail though and to be fair only started using Sammys over the last 12 - 15 months, so still early days.

    Re: New HardDisk?

wd or seagate is what i use, but look for a 3-5 year warenty
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

    Re: New HardDisk?

The seagate 5 year warranty seals it for me, no other manufacturer is prepared to offer that although I guess in 5 years a 500Gb drive will look like an archaic dinosaur and you wouldn't want it replaced, you'll be looking for a 4Tb SS drive then

    Re: New HardDisk?

It looks like all you need is another drive to add to your existing setup as a storage drive.

Id say most knowledeable people on this forum will advise you get either the WD or Samsung.

I would get either of those two and go for the the cheapest of the two...
Its not a system disk there is not really any point on paying more for something thats going to be milliseconds faster or "raid edition"... its not a system disk that you going to run apps from or raid up and run windows off.

Just look for the size you want... then look at the price difference between the WD & samsung... choose the best priced

Can't go wrong with a HD501LJ. Or you could wait a little for the next lot of Samsung drives with fewer platters.
