Cool Gaming rig for CoD4, Crysis, SoF3 etc.

    Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new rig from scratch for the new upcoming titles (CoD4, Crysis, SoF3, etc). I want to play on highest quality with smooth FPS (with dx10 I guess :/), without spending more than necessary (after all in 1 year it will be outdated anyway).

What sort of components should I be looking at?

This time I would like to make a decision within hours rather than months, so I hope you tech experts can help me out (or is there a new chipset coming out in 1 week that will make all the prices drop 50%? in this case please warn me, cause I would like to avoid that too ;-):

    CPU: Q6600 G0 I guess?
    mobo: recommendations?
    RAM: 2GB+ (recommendations?)
    GPU?
    PSU?
    case?
    coolling?
    OS: Vista Pro?

LCD: ~24" (something that will let the games shine without spending 1k on monitor alone, so I guess 24" looks most reasonable? (£320+ from scan). Unless 1920x1200 widescreen is not a good idea for games?

    Budget:
I was looking to spend ~1k (not necessarily inc. LCD) + more if it's necessary/worth it, or less if it's not worth it - you know the drift ;-) If the system can be upgraded in the future for even faster games it's a bonus.

    Cheers!

Re: Gaming rig for CoD4, Crysis, SoF3 etc.

    GPU: 8800GTX i reckon
    PSU: Corsair 620HX

Case and RAM, I'm not too sure of. I got myself
    RAM: 2GB of kingston HyperX
Case: Gigabyte Aurora 570 - but that's really down to personal preference...

OS: I havn't got Vista, but from what I've heard, most of the frame rate problems are pretty much fixed, so there's nothing wrong with getting it.

Cooling wise, Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120

But make sure you check with the other forum members!

Re: Gaming rig for CoD4, Crysis, SoF3 etc.

It does appear there is a new chipset comming within a couple of weeks. First the 8800GT will get released, apparently around the 29th October and shortly after that nVidia are due to put out the 780i chipset to compete against the X38 chipset.

Given that a single 8800GT combined with PCIe 2.0 and DDR3 is rumoured to be *nearly* up to the performance of an 8800GTX, it's a good bet that when it's paired up with the nVidia 780i chipset and a pair of them run in SLI you should get 8800GTX performance or better (drivers willing) for what should be slightly less money.

Unfortunately though, it's all rumours and until the release dates, you could find yourself purchasing the exact same rig after all the fuss has died down.

The Corsair units are likewise tested and rated at 50º C, so the main question usually becomes do you want to pay an extra £20 ish for the modular capabilities and *slightly* quieter performance.

We can't really give recommendations unless you give us a budget.

Also, do you intend on overclocking?

If your spending on things like quad cores and 8800gtx's, £20 extra for the modular PSU is a no-brainer IMO.

I personally could not go back to non-modular PSUs.

EDIT: I'd also get 4GB of RAM

Red face Re: Gaming rig for CoD4, Crysis, SoF3 etc.

Thanks for the replies ppl. After posting I smacked my head because I remembered I don't have a decent broadband connection atm, only 3G... So that I gotta sort out too before I'm ready for MP gaming.

And it may not be particularly easy since one of my housemates owes 500 quid to BT (BT's fault though apparently), who now blocked his line. So I may need to consider moving.

This way I guess the whole project gets postponed till mid November.

On the plus side, those games are gonna be released then, and maybe some components will be cheaper

Anyway, thanks again, I'll get back to you once my net is sorted out.

    i wouldn't say that...

Ive got the demo running at 1920X1200 with everything on high but no AA and it runs fine. The lowest the frame rate drops is 23fps, and that is only once or twice, usually its in the mid to high 30s

Mid November is probably the best time to buy, i'm waiting till November 19th for the new 8800GTS supposedly quicker than the GTX. I'm hoping with a Q6600 and fixes between now and Crysis being released it will run at 1600x1200 very high, (no AA of course).
