    Another problem with my PC

Getting cheesed off with it now, but still here we go.

Bought a Radeon X1950 Pro the other day, didn't feel comfortable with taking the GPU cooler of the X1800 XT as the last card I did that to I killed it.

Anyway put the new card in, windows booted up fine, I re-installed the ATI drivers, downloaded the latest Catalyst ones from ATI. I think my first misstake was not uninstalling the old ones first, but anyway got them installed rebooted and Windows was stable.

Decided to play HL2 Episode One, about 10 mins in, Windows crashes, well the game does, screen goes blank. Hit the reset button and try again same problem.

I then thought ok lets clean the drivers out totally so get hold of Driver Sweeper from guru 3d (Probably should have done this first) before running that I removed anything to do with ATI from add remove programs, then ran the sweeper.

Re-installed the ATI drivers after a few reboots, play EP1 again, same problem. Now thinking that it's an error with the ATI drivers themselves I go off and download moega drivers, after sweeping out and unistalling the ATI Drivers first.

With the omega drivers installed now, at least I don't get a hard lock up, but sadly when I try to load the saved game in EP1 it just crashes out to desktop.

Looking in last nights event log I've got this error message for EP1

Faulting application hl2.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module datacache.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000b423.

I'm hoping that this is just a problem with the drivers as they are by the looks of things in a right mess, will be very annoyed if it's hardware, not having much luck with PC's at the moment, am very tempted to just sell the whole lot off, get an xBox 360 and a decent Laptop and not bother with PC gaming anymore.

I plan this evening (when I get home from work) to do yet another clean install of Windows, but I'd sooner not if I can get away with it.

Re: Another problem with my PC

Hi, are these the latest drivers that you installed? If so, try using 1-2 version below the latest, then, (once again) clearing anything to do with the drivers, reboot and install the older version driver.

Sometimes, this works because the newest drivers have new bugs in them that have yet to be detected by the testers (yes, that's us, the users).

As to whether it is a hardware fault, that is possable. I think (not totally sure) that there were known problems with sapphire x1950pro cards, do a search.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Another problem with my PC

Mine isn't a Sapphire card, it's a generic one. Something that I did think of was that maybe my power supply is overloaded ? A 480 watt power supply driving 4 hdd's, and 1 optical drive.

Re: Another problem with my PC

That's alot of diskspace but I would think that 480w should be ok, but may be worth trying dis-connecting a couple of the hdd's (if your system allows) for a few days, see if there's any improvement. If there is, then invest in a good psu from a good Co.

Have you tried testing your memory, memtest is free and will, generaly, show up any memory faults. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Does your gfx card have adequate cooling, with a good airflow, if your card is overheating this could cause crashes.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Another problem with my PC

I did a new install of XP last night because I was sure that the mess my driers were in was the cause of it all. Once all the drivers were back in and the system was useable I put Quake 4 in with the latest patch and that ran fine for an hour without a glitch, I then put Call of Duty 2 in and that was also fine.

Now about to try Half Life 2 again and see what happens with that but I think I've cured it. However should the problem be present now as HL2 is a more demanding game I would say that it's then time to start looking a little deeper and pulling out the hard drives that aren't needed inside my PC, I mean 1.3 TB's of storage is kinda madness lol

I know my ram is fine as that was one of the first tests I did on my PC when I was getting the problem, that ran for something like 3 hours on memtest with no faults found.

Case cooling isn't too nad, Lian Li PC7 + with 2 x 120 mm fans front and back and the card itself has a lovely Zalman clone cooler on it, no idea what the temps are on this card though as it wasnot supplied with a temp probe, unlike the X1800 XT which was for some reason.

Update - After an hour of Episode 1 it crashed, leads me now to suspect that I have a cooling issue with my PC, yet it was well over an hour last night with Quake 4 for well over an hour and not any hint of any problems, the same with Call of Duty 2.

Re: Another problem with my PC

Well it would appear the problem is with any Direct 3D type game, PC will crash in 5 mins, maybe 10 mins or maybe an hour. Yet if I play any Open GL based game (Quake 4, COD 2) then I can game for hours and it won't crash, it's rock solid.

Is this the X1950 Pro possibly faulty or am I barking up the wrong tree ?? If I have to return it to Aria I'm a bit worried they won't take it back as I had to mod the card io shield to fit in my case.

Re: Another problem with my PC

Have just put in an RMA request with Aria for a refund and will take the gpu cooler off my X1800 XT and clean that out and put that back in, I doubt there is much of a performance difference anyway.
