I use my PC mainly for gaming but also surfing the web and doing uni work

OS: Windows XP 64 bit edition (i can get this free from university)

CASE: ThermalTake Kandalf VA9003BWS Black super tower +Window c/w 25cm fan

Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLI NF650i SLi, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

PSU: OCZ 600SXS StealthXStream 600W PSU
3.3v 36A,
5V 30A
12V1 18A, 12V2 18A, 12V3 18A, 12V4 18A
-12V 0.5A

CPU: Quad Core Q6600 SLACR 95W and Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro bundle

RAM: 2x OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1024) Special Operation Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 5-5-5-12
OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1024) Special Operation Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 5-5-5-12 Dual Channel Memory Spec Ops Camouflage Heatspreader -
OR
OCZ 2x 2GB Kit (2x1024) Platinum Series DDR2 PC6400 800MHz 4-4-4-15 (which is better?)
2GB Kit (2x1024) Platinum Series DDR2 PC6400 800MHz Dual Channel Memory Rev. 2 With Platinum Heatspreader - OCZ2P800R22GK

Hardrive: 320 Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 MS

Graphics Card: 8800GT, not decided on which website to buy from yet

DVD-RW: Samsung SH-S202N/BEBN 20x DVD±R, 16xDVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, PATA,Lightscribe, Black, OEM inc. Nero

Sound Card: Im not sure on this one, i could use my old Audigy 2zs or go X-FI, what do you think?

Also i have a few questions
will i be able to get the Q6600 to 3GHZ with that cooler?
Do i need 4GB of RAM for windows XP?
Is that powersupply enough for a future upgrade to SLI?

That PSU should do SLi quite nicely.

You don't need 4gb of RAM for xp no.. 64bit can utilise all 4gb but you won't notice a big difference.

I would personally not go with xp 64bit as i've tried it once and found the lack of driver support alarming..this was some time ago though.

32bit xp is perfectly adequate for most needs

Sound card..use your old one or use onboard.. it's not worth upgrading that unless you are a serious audiophile and can see room for improvement.

The ocz platinum is better, it has the tighter timings.

The freezer pro should handle that but I would go with one of the bigger 120mm towers, scythe range, thermalright extreme.. etc..

I believe 650i boards only do SLi @ 8x PCIe which means it won't work particuarly well with 16x cards like the GT's

the 680i boards offer full 16x SLi if this is a route you want to follow.

Yeh your right there but Anandtech's review of this board it showed that it doesnt make a difference even with 2x8800gtx', the difference is like 1-2%

Id send you the URL but i dont have the priviliages as im <5 posts

one thing i am concerned about is its mex memory speed is 800mhz, im guessing DDR3 will become the new standard memory in the next 2 years, and i really dont want to get caught out like i did with DDR memory

Is it worth paying an extra £25 for a DDR3 board?

And im getting the freezer 7 pro in a bundle, so it costs me £7 and i really cant afford a £30 CPU cooler

Only if you have the 100+ quid extra you would need for the ddr3 too.
Yes you will probably get some kind of performance boost..
But spending close to £200 for 1GB of ram to me is crazy, but then again i'm just a poor student.

Re: New Build, What do you think

An extra £25 for a DDR3 board now or a better all round board for £100 or so when you actually want to upgrade to DDR3 in the future... I know what I would do (Hint: It doesn't involve buying a board with DDR3 support just for the hell of it) Oh yeah and you would have to check the DDR3 board was compatible with DDR2 as well or else you are going to be paying a sizeable chunk of cash on DDR3 memory!

Here is a board that supports both notice 6 RAM slots 4 for DDR2 and 2 for DDR3 I think,
Asus P5KC, iP35, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2/DDR3 1066/1333/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

Any way as I was saying stick with the DDR2 ram! Unless you have £200 to spend on ram of course in which case fire away with DDR3, pretty sure the money would be better spent elsewhere though!

Re: New Build, What do you think

Webby that board has got some bad reviews from hardware websites, and i looked on newegg for customer reviews and theres lots of bad feedback about that board

Im sticking with DDR2, i think my mobo will be outdated when i want to upgrade in 2 years anyway as i think intel will raise the FSB to 1600mhz by then rendering my mobo obselete for upgrades

im looking at the Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L for £57 on scan, has everything want on the board basically

Re: New Build, What do you think

Sorry I wasn't actually suggesting that you get that board just finding an example of a board which supported both DDR2 and 3 to show that it required a special board and that buying a DDR3 board would require the purchase of DDR3 memory as well.

Once again sorry for any confusion, oh and good choice sticking with DDR2 And the Gigabyte board should be good my GA-G33M-DS2R is great
