Intel RAID - Moving RAID from P965 ICH8R mobo to P35,X38 mobo or future Intel mobos ?

I'm assuming it's possible, in theory, to move a RAID array from a P965 mobo to a P35 or X38 mobo, but has anyone actually done it successfully ?

Also, what's Intel's policy on RAID support with future mobos (do they state they will be backwards compatible for so many generations of their mobos) ?

The ICHx series of southbridges that support raid are forwards compatible, you can upgrade and still have your raid array work. There's a few testing charts floating around which show to what extent backwards compatibility exists, too.

That's great news. I was considering getting a cheap RAID card (eg. XFX Revo 3 port), but as I will probably stay with Intel CPU's for the next few years at least, I don't think I'll bother, particularly considering the good performance of Intel Matrix RAID.

Do you just plug the drives into the new mobo, or do you have to do something else to set it up ?

Just plug the drives in and the controller will read the RAID metadata from the end of the disk like nothing changed.

I had a weird 'issue' where if I plugged the drives in, then enabled RAID it wouldn't find the array.
Simply enabling RAID in the BIOS, then putting the disks in worked fine

Would this be controller dependent, i.e. my current setup uses a promise raid controller, would say an intel one still be able to pick it up?

In fact never mind after reading another thread, just realised this probably wouldn't work.

It wouldn't work.
Each software based RAID has their own implementation.
