    Is a e2180 superior to the Opteron180?

    Hi,

    I'm considering an upgrade, currently I have a opteron 180 (2.6Ghz), 2gb RAM & a 7900GT.

    Would a e2180 clocked to greater than 2.8Ghz out perform a Opteron 180 @ 2.6Ghz?

The usage of of the pc would be browsing with the occasional game here or there.

    Hope someone can help.

    Thx,
    ManC

Not really, the E2xxx series is limited to 1MB of cache, the one major advantage the Core microarchitecure has over AMD64 architecure is it's incredible cache subsystem and cache volume and scalability. This allows Core to make up for it's indirect memory access via the northbridge by making it a non-issue. If you're on a budget stick with the E4xxx series, if not the Q6600 is the sweet spot between price and performance.

The Opteron 180 is equivalent to the AMDx2 4800+. Clock for clock the C2D will be faster, unless the app is particularly cache dependant.

there's really no point in that 'upgrade' the benefit wouldn't be that much.

unless your going to seriously overclock, 3.3-3.5Ghz you might not see a difference.

Gaming wise core2 is faster than amd, clock for clock, but for a noticeable difference you'll need to balance with the graphics as well, what did you have in mind? a high mid-range should be good for the system I think. 8600, or if you wait a few weeks a 8800gt, which would rock!

Cheers for the replies, I think I need to raise the bar for my proposed cpu, so am I correct in thinking I want to aim for a Q6600?

    Thx.

I wouldn't bother with a cpu upgrade. You will see far more benefit spending the Q6600 money on a 8800GT. (unless ofcourse you are going for a complete new build of mobo/cpu/ram?/gfx)

Browsing and general PC work was conquered with an athlon xp 3200 (or equivalent) and 1gb ram so you won't see a difference in general work with a chip that is a bit faster than the one you already have (and you already have 2gb ram) but you will see a massive improvement in games with a new gfx card.

Well decision made, will hold out and save my pennies, its the Q6600/8800GT all the way.

    Cheers for all the replies.
