Easy Removal External Storageage Solution

Lo people,

I need a present for my Dad. He needs stroageage. But his C case wont hold any more drives, and he doesnt have a spare front drive plate to put one of the excellent easily swappable Icybox SATA caddies in that I use.

So I need an external drive enclosure, with USB2 connectivity, and that he can swap SATA drives in and out of lightning fast (no screws)

Never mind your dad, that looks perfect for consolidating some of my old hard drives.

Looks the ticket for your old man too. Essentially it seems to be one of those swappable caddy things but for usb.

could you not put one of those caddys inside a 5.25inch external caddy

what I'd LIKE is a larger box..one that holds up to 4 disks. But dont want RAID. Dont need a realuy fancy Thecus box.....need a basic, 4 hdd external enclosure to hold the drives, and I want t be able to add drives as he buys them.

The only thing i can think of that would be even close to what you are looking for, is external Infiniband cases.

This for example:
HighPoint-RocketMate 1200

Of course you also need an infiniband controller....

Anyway, that might get you started hunting in another direction

The enclosure you link looks excellent (might get one myself), but USB2 for HDs is a joke when you can have eSATA for peanuts with 7-8x faster speed.

thats good.

Does that just use ONE SATA lead from the device to the PC?

Host Interface: 4 x SATA

so 4 SATA leads.
and you would also need 2 SATA power adapters if you are going to put 4 HDDs in, as it has only 2 real SATA power, and 2 MOLEX

Actually, and I need a slap, I forgot Span, normally my 1st port of call for such things, like when I converted my collection of IDE hdd enclosures to e-sata for a couple of quid a piece. They always have loads of interesting goodies if you hunt around.

well...I used to think that, but USB 2 seems damn near as fast for daily stuff.

However, the E sata back plate....I have a spare so it's cheaper still
