Would my existing PSU/RAM be fine for Q6600 Upgrade
Hello All,
Day off today, and unluckily for the bank account, am *this* close to pressing buy on Scan for a G0 Q6600, and Asus P5K Premium Wifi AP. Thing is I cant afford to do a total system rebuild, so no new case, PSU, HDD etc. Just going for the CPU and mobo but wanted to ask if they could integrate with my other components OK.
My PSU is a Hiper 580W non-modular and the RAM that I have is only Kingston Value 5300 (4x KVR667D2N5). The RAM was bought a while back when the prices were cheap, and tbh were meant for a media PC build for my dad and bro-in-law.
But if i were to just run the Q6600 at stock then:
1) Would that CPU be fine with the CPU? I have 2 HDD, DVD-RW and a 8800GTS, which is OC too.
2) Can I run the RAM at stock, as that corellates exactly with the 266 FSB right?
I will probably consider upgrading both the RAM (Once I do more research AGAIN) and PSU once I have more funds, but if the current system could use those then I can start an interim upgrade.
I think too much reading of Clunks guide has made me want to upgrade :) A bit worried that there might be newer CPUs coming out that may be better, drop prices more - Is this a good time to get a Q6600 - or should I just wait a liiiiitle bit longer?
Oh - and as a side note, I've gone for the Asus P5K Premium Wifi Deluxe as that seems to be a good clocking board - I want it mainly for better OC eventually, not extra features, so is there another Asus P5K that would be as good at clocking, but cheaper? There seems to be about 10 variants so its a bit confusing. I'm guessing I'll get the "You get what you pay for" answer....
Any help would be great and then maybe I can send the order off today or something! Even at stock, it should whoop my X2 4200+

Re: Would my existing PSU/RAM be fine for Q6600 Upgrade
Both will be ok to do that upgrade.
Thats probably the best P5K for overclocking so you'll be ok with that, but I'm not sure how it will be with that RAM. Guessing it will work but it may not like it.
The PSU isn't the best but theres plenty enough power for what you want to do.

Thanks for the input there mike - RAM is something that I want to research more but just wanted to get the system up and running first at stock. As per usual after looking into it more, will have to shell out, as there is only one EIDE port, and my HDD and DVDRW are EIDE. Meh... :) New toys

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
pretty much the only one I can think of.
SATA dvd drives are only around £15 - £20 so it's not a bad way to go.
OCUK have some very good deals on RAM at the moment, might be worth checking them out. I just got geil ultra pc6400 for £38 :)
Re: Would my existing PSU/RAM be fine for Q6600 Upgrade
Yep - been seeing the deals flying round - silicon prices are good at the moment. True about the DVDRW though - i know its not a lot, but just another unexpected cost, which adds up.
Will probably just get a 500GB Samsung SATAII drive from Scan - ought to be fine, then use the IDE one as a second in my media PC.
The more I read about the Asus mobos the more difficult it gets. Comparing the PSK-E and the premium deluxe, then just read about the P5KC which doesnt have raid, but can have DDR3 for a little more future proofing. Mind you, although its cheaper, I guess I want to make sure that the board has good OC potential, and the premium is proven... Hmmm

There is the next generation coming very soon.
It is a bad time to buy one because the price is high at the moment.
Be patient (only a few weeks)

OP - what are your plans for current ASROCK mobo - I am interested in one of those for partial upgrade.
Re: Would my existing PSU/RAM be fine for Q6600 Upgrade
P5K-E is almost exactly the same as the P5K deluxe apart from 1 less gigabit port and less fancy cooling (Possibly a good thing)

Sorry, if I were to upgrade - and i may delay it a couple of weeks, then its more than likely going to go towards a computer upgrade for a family menber or a home server. Has served me well, but to be honest, you'd be better off getting an AM2 board or something - unless you were like me and wanted to use the DDR1 and AGP card that was left. Either way, it was flexible for the time, but getting extra DDR1 ram and the EOL of S939 means that its not that great an idea at the moment...
