Which memory?

I'm putting together the bits for a new pc for a friend, not looking at any heavy overclocking. (only slight oc if I can talk him into it)

Looking into what memory to get, 2x1gb DDR2, will be on XPpro so no need for 4gb and games he plays really need 2gb

Narrowed it down to 3 from Scan
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 - £33.36
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2 DHX, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5 - £50.10
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 - £54.80

Thoughts?
Also considering 1GB MicronMajor, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5 - £15.26 (2x = £30.52)
Down sides are 1year warranty, don't know the full latencies or voltage (going to poke scan for more details) non-paired
I'm currently useing 2 sticks of this stuff and I've not had any problems yet . . .

Re: Which memory?

as much as I like scan they aren't the best etailer for ram.

Theres cheaper and better out there.

That said the corsair is superbly stable and reilable if it's run at stock settings.

What CPU are looking at buying?

I'd probably have the cas4 corsair if it must be from scan. Go for the tightest timings you can get.

I've got 2 sets of what PeteSmith has linked to..and its fantastic stuff. Stays nice and cool and has been completly reliable even clocked at 950mhz

EDIT: the corsair is slightly cheaper on scans today only

Unless you need to use Scan for some reason go for the Geil.

Which processor is going with it?
EDIT: ok a 6750 is 333x8 so you will only need DDR667 to run at stock, and the Corsair will give a little bit over that since its 675(?)

Re: Which memory?

Your forgetting delivery, granted that leaves the price around 48-50 mark but then I'm looking at the ease of ordering all the bits from the same place being less hassle than saveing a quid or two.

EDIT: my mistake £44-45ish with delivery.
So £10 saveing, might have to think about this . . .

Re: Which memory?

Yep go for the Geil if you are overclocking or go for the £33 corsair if you aren't. It may be worth getting the geil anyway (<£10 diff) since it will give you the choice to overclock later if you want.

Re: Which memory?

Its so reliable..it's not worth thinking about

tbh i've never had to RMA to geil. If you do it to OCUK direct.. you might have problems.

Microdirect are good though I think.

Re: Which memory?

I would go for the Corsair from the choices listed above. What is the price difference? about 4 quid tops? If the RAM were to arrive doa from Ocuk, you will have to foot the bill for the postage there and back.

ALso take into account that the price listed for 2nd class delivery on ocuk is only insured for up to £32 as well, so if it didnt turn up at all, you would lose around £18 on the deal and still have no ram

Re: Which memory?

I think Geil warranty returns are 12 months from supplier, and after that you return it to GeIL, which is in the US. Wasn't impressed with it when I owned some personally.... it did exactly what it said on the tin but not much more. A bloke bought some from one of the 'bargain' threads the other day and couldn't get it to overclock much either. If your mate isn't interested in overclocking it though, then it will do fine. Personally I get crucial whenever possible these days because of the UK based RMA support, and the fact that RAM is one of the components likely to fail, along with HDD and mobo.
