is a q6600 worth it atm as its rarely used for gaming what gt would you reccomend then
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
The Q6600 is more than worth it, it'll keep any graphics card fed with instructions as well as other threads that games work on (physics, AI, etc). As for make, BFG or eVGA both make great cards.

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
http://forums.hexus.net/current-barg...0-29-33-a.html
Massive saving over the Patriot RAM, they are slightly slower but the ballistix line OCs well
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
hmmm im not a big fan of overclocking usually ends up worse i just tend to buy it n leave it lol
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
i aint to sure on the mobo cpu and graphics card is there anybetter out there for the price ect
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Like I said, Q6600 + 8800GT.. Motherboard is ok *if* you intend on going SLi in the future, else, get one of the Abit IP35's. As for memory, whatever is the cheapest if you're not overclocking.

I second that, would get the ABit motherboard, and would get some ballistix ram. You can get 2GB PC8500 for about £65 at the minute which is only slightly slower, and you really will not notice the difference, but will save £80.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Stick with what you have.......
The only part i would change is the PSU...the OCZ's are a little expensive now considering what Corsair and Enermax have to offer.
(Stick with the GTX over the GT)
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Why would he want to pay £150+ more for less than a 5% performance gain and ~35% more power drain?
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Indeed, and the RAM he is looking at is a complete waste of money tbh.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
so u recommend i get a few sticks of
1GB Ballistix DDR2 PC2-8500
now wat abbout gfx card and cpu
YOYOtech
this looks like a good base system for the price what is worth upgrading in that im not going to buy a prebuilt system as i can build myself
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
im thinking of gettint the core 2 duo 3ghz chip and changing the mobo to
YOYOtech
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Unless you are dead set on SLi i'd probably stick with a P35 board. The 650i isn't a bad board imo but I think the P35 will be more stable with higher clocks and most likely run a fair bit cooler.
For the same price of that dual you can get the quad.. no contest for me there.
If you want a dual go with your original one (E6750) and overclock.
The quad with a decent air cooler can hit 3.2+ Ghz , with that on 4 cores your golden for a good few years im sure :)

is the quad core really worth it it does seem liek a good future proof option
so intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600
YOYOtech
will this fit for it im not to knowledgable with amd chips if not wats the best cooling option for it
YOYOtech
and the p35 board
gd?

Apart from a few exceptions, not so much right now (the Source engine is still single-threaded, for instance), but quite possibly in the next year. If I were buying right now the Q6600 would be the only choice, but I'm waiting for Penryn next year.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
The cooler is fine but it may limit your overclock if you plan on doing so.
this is an awesome cooler if you can stomach the extra cost. Comes with £12 worth of fan though which is near silent :)
YOYOtech
The q6600 is a great chip and certainly worth £160. The E6850 isn't imo.

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
looks good i must say im complety confussed now on wat to buy :(:(
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Whether or not this will help I dont know but,
I would go with:
Case: Antec 900/Antec P182
Mobo: Abit IP-35
CPU: intel Q6600
PSU: corsair 520w HX Whisper
GFX: 8800GT (probably evga because of the good warranty and it looks good :D)
RAM: 2-4GB Geil,Patriot,Crucial .. PC6400 is fine for any overclocking you could do with the q6600. Geil is my personal choice but they are all good.
HDD: Western Digital AAKS or Samsung Spinpoints.
optical: whatever tickles your fancy..i go with optiarc or samsung.
HSF: Scythe Ninja rev B
Should come in under £750
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Since you are buying a pc around december, it might be worth considering the amd phenoms as they should be coming out sometime this month.
No doubt hexus will have a review of them, including a comparison against the Q6600.
But if you were going to buy a pc now, then I would also recommend the Q6600.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
does anyone have any links to a comparison of the 8800 series
also everyone seems to be saying get a gt wats the best GT to purchase

where would be the best place to purcahse this stufff
seems nice im still wondering is it worth either gettign faster like ram or just more of it any reccomendations as it seems of what i knew bout ram has gone out the window
what GT to get or is it worth paying ectra for gtx ?
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
The 512MB 8800GT is the one to go for if you are gaming at high resolutions..... what size monitor will you be using? Faster RAM will make hardly any difference to your system performance, but as the Ballistix PC8500 is so cheap at the minute it would be worth it, I certainly wouldn't spend any more than £65 on 2GB though. 4GB may be useful for the future, but I'm not sure that anything really needs it at the minute, Vista users say its useful, but I'm still on XP so couldn't comment really:). The extra money for a GTX is not really worth it at low resolutions as the GT is quite close and soooo much cheaper, but by December the GTS and GTX refreshed cards might be available, which will blow the GT away. I would agree with the others who recommend getting a quad and OCing it... it is very easy to do, and plenty of people on here would be happy to talk you through it I'm sure, if you don't want to follow Clunk's guide. As for coolers, the Thermalright Ultra 90 is absolutely excellent for the money and relatively small too, I'd heartily recommend it.
Any of the big online retailers should be fine to buy from if they have cheap prices, Yoyotech, Komplett, Scan, Ebuyer, etc. A lot of people on here including myself would recommend avoiding OCUK though.

Then wait for Penryn chips. If you aren't buying NOW, then asking for advice is pretty useless IMO.
"2 duel TFTs" - will they be dueling with swords or pistols?
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
hmmmm wont the penryn be really expensive on 1st realese and when are the due to come out

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK is where most of us shop as they give us free delivery for positng on hexus :D and they are cheaper for most things anyway.
You'll qualify for free delivery when you get to 25 posts.
Asus isn't better than Abit. In terms of quality both are much of a muchness really but abit are much better on support.
abit.care@HEXUS - HEXUS.community discussion forums
I've got 2 of each and both have never failed but the i have contacted asus for support and eventually given up.

That's true, though very few games are based on the Source engine, nearly all the games in the last year have been multithreaded, perhaps not well balanced enough to be considered multi-core optimised, but it's good enough and the situation is only improving.

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Most of the 8800GTs are built from the same reference design, there's not much that sets them apart, BFG and eVGA come highly recommended though for build quality and eVGA in particular come with a great warranty. You have the option of getting a factory pre-overclocked card (labelled "OC2" by BFG and "Superclocked" by eVGA).
I'd go for a WD AAKS series disk, they're just as quiet as the spinpoints but a tad faster in performance.
Don't pay attention to 'hardcore gamers', they're short sighted and pretty clueless. The Q6600 is the best buy, even in present day gaming they level or ace dual cores and will obliterate them in future games.
Everything else looks spot on.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
what's the total cost from yoyotech ?
Other places to look at are Scan Computers UK (you get free delivery if you have 25+ posts, you have 17 already) and Microdirect.
For overclocking, Clunk has done a great guide, it's a sticky I believe. Also Tom's hardware has just released a guide Overclocking: Dual- vs. Quad-Core CPUs | Tom's Hardware
The Scythe Ninja is a decent cooler, there's a roundup of cpu heatsinks at MADSHRIMPS - Hardware Reviews

That ram is pretty much the best you can buy for overclocking. The potential damage to the CPU comes from increasing the voltage to the chip, and can shorten its life dramatically, but a lot of people overclock them with no or very little voltage increase. I have had my E6600 running at 3.4 GHz (instead of the standard 2.4GHz) since I bought it last year and no problems so far. The Scythe Ninja is good, I think the Ultra 90 performs better, is smaller and cheaper, but both will do the job nicely.

YOYOtech
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
have i made a good choice with the adivce given from yo guys how does this compare to my orginal pick and can someone help with my gfx card choice problem
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
For the graphics
Forget the GTS for £285, you can buy GTX's from £290+
Go with an 8800GT whatever is in stock will be fine. If you've got money to spare you could get a GTX or ultra instead, but with the new GTS coming out in December and new cards next year it makes more sense to get an 8800GT.
To use up your budget, you could get a speedy 150G WD Raptor HD as your main hard drive with a drive silencer, and use a Samsung for a storage drive.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Forget the GTS, the GT kills it in every way, and the GTX in some regards, and not far behind on performance. In terms of a price/performance/energy ratio, the GT is a win.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
so u will reccomend i get this one
YOYOtech
or is there a bettr 1 out there
sooo with wat i have come up with now is it looking good?
bare in mind i will be running 2 19inch tfts and wanting to play crysis bioshock ect

I have 2 19" heads on my old 8800GTS, plays all current games fine. So that card will be fine.

seems good and a not bad price 2

-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
I wouldn't bother with the ballistix tbh. If you overclock you'll want to run the ram and cpu fsb's 1:1 and even PC6400 wouldn't be running it's stock speed at the speeds the q6600 will hit.
PC6400 @ stock settings has a q6600 running 3.6GHz which isn't going to happen.
This ram is perfect for what you need
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
Cheap as chips and really good quality. Got 2 sets myself and a mate has a set.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
nice for ocuk thats a ace price hmm yes 2 packs of that crank that up get it running nicely then im good to go
any reccomendations on extra cooling

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
you can save another tenner getting the today only q6600 oem from scan, since you are getting the ninja anyway.

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
that case is great for cooling. With the Scythe ninja it'll run very cool and quiet (you'll only hear the graphics card)

i shall hav a look at that thanks for your help soo u think with that pc i will be all good wen i have overclocked it and i will get a nice performance output from it?
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
It would be good even without overclocking :) It will certainly be a good performer for a fair few years
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Currently the 8800GT is the best card for the cash, but it'svery hard to get hold of due to shortages, if you're not buying untill xmass then the shortages should of been sotred out well before that.
However there will be new revisions of the 8800GTS and 8800GTX so they may be a better choise . . . we just don't know yet.
Also by xmass better coolers should start appearing for the 8800gt.
For make BFG and EVGA are rated as the best as they have good cards and 10year warranties :) (like with the ABit and ASUS motherboards, there's not much between them except after sales service)
If you consider a Thermalright cpu cooler then it's the Ultima-90 not the Ultra-90 you want to go for.
Although the Scythe ninja plus is a good cooler.
I agree with staffsmike on the ram, if you're not going for silly overclocks then pc2-6400 is all you need to get a decent overclock. the extra speed of pc2-8500 really will not give you much off a boost (the memory and cpu talk to each other through the northbridge of the motherboard, so the FSB on the motherboard becomes the bottle neck)
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
The revised GTS (more stream processor one) does apparently just about win out over the GT which then brings all three of the 8800's so close together performance wise that neither the GTS or GTX would get my money.
Hard to say at the moment I suppose. You certainly won't be making a bad decision by going with the GT.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Penryn pricing will probably be similar to the pricing for Core2 when it first came out last year: Very expensive top-of-the-line desktop and server chips first, rapidly followed by mainstream desktop chips, with the value-priced line coming a month or two after.
The first Penryn server chips are going on sale on Monday. Some have already leaked onto pricelists, and they start at $255.
If you're not going to be buying in the next week, then this whole exercise is pointless (particularly with regards to pricing stuff up), and unless you need a system right now I'd advise waiting 6 weeks or so to get a system with a desktop Penryn chip anyway.
-
Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
Personally, I'd throw in a sound card if your budget allows. I consider the X-Fi a decent all-rounder, though there are better options if you primarily listen to music, requires 5.1 optical out.

Re: new stuff thinking of getting need opinions
You'll be hard pushed to find a good 22" at that price, a cheap one yes but high quality no.
personally I'd look at a good quality main monitor for games and such and a cheapo 2nd monitor if it's not dooing anything where quality and responce is such an issue (haveing text type stuff doesn't really need high quality and fast response times)
Look for 3 year "On site" warranties.
While I've prefured monitors where the PSU is built in (ie a standard power lead plugs into the monitor not into a seperate power unit) as it's far less wires hanging about and not PSU unit to hide someware.
However I'm starting to shift back the other way, we've not had a single power problem with the seperate PSU monitors, but if anything goes on a built in PSU monitor it tends to be the PSU.
Also it should be fairly easy to replace a seperate PSU once it's out of warranty, but it's going to be far harder to replace an inbuilt one.
