In this day & age of super accurate optical & laser mice, is a mousemat or pad still a viable purchase? Or do you think your desk/table etc is sufficient?
Desk FTW!
Mousemat!
My logitech MX something or other just doesn't glide on the wooden desk I'm using atm. Stick my fUNC mousemat underneath, and it's smooth. Playing UT3 these days and there was a noticable difference.

i use a trackball, so no mousemat!
My Desk it reflective and my Laser mouse needs a matt.

Exactmat !
My desk is a homebrew desk - think a kitchen worktop with a cupboard underneath and you get the idea
Tesco Polish is all I use to make the surface ultra glidey for when I need to pwn n00bs with my 180 degree jumping headshots.
MX1000 & Icemat v2 combo here - I have yet to find anything I prefer (so much so, I've got 2 MX1000s)
Laser mice are actually pretty crap at tracking on anything other than a decent mat.
I bought a SteelSeries mouse mat to use with my MX518 and to be honest i've noticed bugger all difference. Perhaps a laser mouse is more discerning but optical mice basically work on anything.
At home i use a MS Trackball, the laptops touchpad or the screen in tablet mode.
At work i just use the desk.
There is nothing worse than using someone elses desk and they have a horrible cheap, curled, ripped, dirty, pathetic, useless mouse mat.
It's almost as bad as when they have several millimetres of mouse-crud on the bottom of it and round the ball rollers. And they wonder why their mouse is unresponsive
(sorry, that turned into a little rant )
