Hey Guys,
Just looking at getting a new cooler for the ol' CPU. I'm considering this combination here:
Thermalright 800U w/ an 80mm Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 2 attached. I would also be using a ducting mod to get a more even distribution of air across the sink.
I think this will give me the best balance between quiet cooling and powerful cooling, what with the thermal sensor on the fan. At top speed it blows close to 80 CFM.
So I'm just looking for opinions or suggestions. Thanks alot guys.
the smart fan 2 is very noisy at high rpm, and you have to go very low on the rpm to make it 'quiet', so with the temperature sensor attached i'm not sure that it will ever run quietly.
i'd suggest a Papst 8412 NG would make a reasonable balance between noise and performance.
and a Papst 8412 NGML would make for quiet cooling.
if you want the best performance a Delta fan is where to go, but i've long disconnected mine because i could hear my pc from downstairs.
i don't think there can be anything wrong with your choice of heatsink :)
Just to give everyone an idea of what I mean by quiet. I currently have a Volcano 7+, set to high that runs at 47 dB. It doesn't really bother me. I would keep it, except I sold my whole rig and building a new one.
not exactly very quiet then, as using a the temperature sensor will run the smart fan at almost / full speed all the time you might as well go for a delta or a tornado if you don't mind the noise at all.
LOL, yeah but the tornado is running at 54 dB, which is just screaming. Combine that with my parents screaming at me to turn it down, and we got some bad news :P

or you could always get a slk900u with a 92mm fan

this is the cheapest wc kit ive seen ever, and its crap BUT i will still beat all/most air cooling - ud need a slk800 and 5k rpm 80mm fan to beat it with air, probly.
im htinking of getting watercooling myself - sell my slk800 and a few fans so i can afford it as it would onyl cos tme about £35 to upgrade to it but recently decided to wait and get the best wc i can with £150
