Server chips and the top-end desktop chip are out now. It's forecast that the mainstream desktop chips will follow in January.

ATI have released their 3x series which is around £100 for a DX10 card! Gotta wait for benchmarks though...

Re: new intel and nvida stuff

Don't bother with the new stuff out now or in January as far as the Intel stuff goes. Intel is releasing *another* 45nm processor line (Nahalam) late next year which will be (supposed to be, anyways...) much better than this first 45nm release. Save money now and get a Q6600 and the 8800GT. I'm building a new rig, so thats what I'm gonna do. The real worthwhile upgrades will come around next Christmas. I would estimate we might see new nVidia cards then too. In the meantime, I'm gonna snatch up an eVGA 8800GT Super-Superclocked Edition.

So, my advice, Fortune, seeing as your specs are exactly the same as my own (the Q6600, 8800GT, and 4 GBs RAM), I say get that and look at doing processor upgrades a year from now (or even hold off until early '09 when the prices ought to drop a bit; that Q6600 will work just fine in the meantime).

When the mainstream Penryn chips come out in Jan they'll be priced the same as comparable Conroe chips now. I'd only advise buying now if a) you need it NOW or b) You're doing a build using a bargain-basement Conroe chip, as Penryn equivalents will take longer to appear.

Re: new intel and nvida stuff

Thats very similar to systems me and my buddy are currently building. The main difference between his and mine is he went dual-core, I went quad, and we got different cases (he got the Antec you're looking at, I got the Raidmax Smilodon) and video cards (the bugger went and got dual 8800 Ultras! I'm gonna be getting a single eVGA 8800GT SSC, later add in another one). Mine is coming out close to $2000 w/ a monitor, his was about $2500 with no monitor.

Yes, the Penryn line is coming in January (and they will be good), but personally, I'd rather wait for the Nahalam (or whatever its called...), which I think will be a much better purchase down the road; I think they'll be a bit better than the Penryn line and worth waiting for.

Your system looks solid (as I said, its *nearly* the exact same as what I'm building). It isn't the absolute best you can buy, its its still pretty danged good!

Re: new intel and nvida stuff

wait until intel releases it's 45nm update for desktop parts. just as cheap, run more cooler. it's true intel are releasing new arcitecture later next year - but thats a overhaul of core2 as far as i know including not socket 775 compatible.

also ati and nvidia will have the graphics battle well and truly on = cheaper cards.

so maybe just before xmas or after - be patient for a month or so and you'll be a happy person. unless you really need a computer now!

Re: new intel and nvida stuff

I have a question...will the Penryn chips run in current Core 2 Quad mobos? I've got an eVGA 680i SLI mobo, and if I haven't bought my processor yet by the time they come out and they are cheap enough, I *might* be tempted to get one... Although I really don't want to wait that long to finish my new rig.

You should be safe with a quality P35 board from a good maker. And 680i seems safe too link

I'm hoping you mean 19" not 91" that would be ridiculous!

And in answer to your question it all depends on what monitor it is! Oh and if new or used widescreen or 4:3 etc. the list could be almost endless!
