    Quick sata query

Guys, just removed my brothers SATA HD from his Apple laptop (2.5 inch drive, obv).

I don't have a SATA caddy... does a 2.5 drive SATA use different connectors to a 3.5 inch? i've compared the size of the gubbins, and they look very very similar, but when i plugged it in, I got nothing showing.

So: like IDE drives, do 2.5 inch SATA drives have different size power and data connectors to their 3.5 inch cousins?

    Cheers

    Re: Quick sata query

I think the connectors are the same - at least the data bit anyway.

Crap... perhaps it's not working then...

Unless, being a mac drive, it's not formatted for a PC to read it?

    Re: Quick sata query

It certainly won't be FAT32 or NTFS, if that's what you mean

The Mac's file format is HFS+ apparently (I haven't a clue about Macs), and won't be recognised by Windows. It should appear in the Disk Manager (right click My Computer and click Manage, and then Disk Management), though it won't have a drive letter or be of a recognised format.

For reference, yes 2.5" SATA drives work from standard SATA connectors. I was playing with one in an IcyBox 3.5" caddy a couple of weeks back.

    Re: Quick sata query

    Sweet, thank you.

Right, caddy it is then. My brother wants to use it for "Time Machine" on the Leopard OS. Middle aged woman spilt a cup of coffee over his laptop in a starbucks in new york. She said "sorry", then by the time he's stood up, she legged it.

He's claimed on the house insurance and got a new one. Apple said it would be £500 to fix his, a new one was only £600 I think.

Interesting thing to take apart... only 512 meg ram... nicely put together, far more "neat" than the Samsung P30 I took apart recently (which I had to rip open as it did NOT want to co-operate. What's the point of having screws in something if they won't undo it?). So now we have an HD-less mac laptop which my 2 years old son is merrily bashing away on. Must put a hologram on the screen for him to make it look real.

    Re: Quick sata query

Oh, yeah: For sale: 2 x 256 meg sticks of RAM*, one apple notebook battery*, one apple notebook charger*, and... well... one apple notebook sans hard drive, not working (something about power something or others). Power light comes on when button pressed, a HD WILL spin up inside it, but NO OS will load, and the screen does not display anything. At all. Not even a jot. But we think the screen works.

    * Specs to follow if anyone expresses interest.

    Re: Quick sata query

    Right, he says:

"all i know is that it was a MacBook with 60GB memory...that's the basic model but i can't remember the rest of the specs...and the new ones are different (ie this new one is the basic one as well, and it has 80gb and 2ghz intel 2 whereas the other (old) one didn't...or had a slower processor)

The one you've got is 14 months old now, i got it last september and it lasts maybe 4 hours? on the battery"

You can't sell in this section mate - there's a for sale section for that (for which you need another 6 posts to access I believe).

    Re: Quick sata query

As others have said, the power and data connectors are identical between 2.5 and 3.5" SATA drives.

The Apple Mac FS is HFS and can be read using a linux live CD. You could then copy the files onto a FAT 32 formatted drive which a Mac can read. However you will lose most of the access control attributes.
