What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
I recently forked out for Vista as i got a good deal and went for the x64 Premium version. What a shock; its really terrible and sluggish. I just popped another 2 gb of RAM into it to take it up to 3GB. This has helped a great deal as it no longer just completely freezes up and goes into an end page file frenzy. Turning of indexing has also really helped. But its still unacceptable.
Even just basic stuff, like using firefox and its all choppy and laggy. The thing is its not that bad a system, bit long in the tooth now, but i have seen Vista Premium (with all eye candy on) running 3 times as well on a laptop with less grunt then my PC.
Im starting to regret spending any money now, i knew i would take a bit of a performance hit, but this is terrible. CS:S used to run like a dream on my XP (with 1gb of RAM), but its unbearable on Vista with all FSAA turned off etc.
Am i missing something here? Could i have a driver issue? I have installed the latest 64 bit versions of the nForce4 driver, Creative driver, Forceware driver. Anything else i have not thought about? Anything else that could help me?
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
I know maybe you dont want to hear this autopilot, but do you really need 64-bit? Heck, i'm not even running Vista 32-bit as things i need drivers for are still in the bleedin production process! It's got such bad press at the moment, and it/'s going to be years before the wheels properly get in motion for full support I think :(
How about coming down to Vista 32?
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
I believe that Vista has it's own power management built in, so make sure that it's not being crippled by the CPU running at a low speed.
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
Hmm, I always find it wierd when people talk about problems with the drivers and performance issues with Vista 64-bit.
I ran it with 2Gb for a while and it was more than sufficient, added another 2Gb as it was cheap, and I've had no problems.
I guess I've just been lucky.....(its the computer in my sig)
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
"What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?" install another OS? :P The 64 bit vista probably needs to mature a bit, no doubt patches will come out that fill fix your issues
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
Installing another OS is not a option (yet) as i have paid for this would like to find solutions that might help my situation as it stands.
I have got 64bt because everyone said that if the drivers are there then go for it, why not i thought i have the Athlon 64 i might as well use it.
Anyway, i think there is something else at play here, like possibly a mobo driver, is installing the nFonce4 package enough?
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
"What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?" - A friend of mine asked me this about 5 weeks ago. I suggested he go back to XP. He did. He reports about a 22-25% performance improvement. He is a happy bunny now.
Sorry, I know that is not what you want to hear.... but it seems to be the case.

I would love to know:
a). How he measured this 'performance improvement'.
b). Why he thinks this ficticious amount is Vista related.

Lol, my thoughts exactly...
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
There is nothing wrong with Vista 64 bit. It must be a hardware issue mate. I would say a HD problem. Can you try a different HD as the boot / master?

I have thought about getting a cheap X2 of eBay or something, but dont want to spend any more cash now unless i am completely sure it will sort it out. The thing is I have seen Vista running much better on lesser machines than mine. Im missing something here, but im banging my head against a brick wall trying to figure out whats at fault. XP used to act in the same way after a fresh install without the motherboard drivers installed, but i have installed the nForce4 ones off nVidia's site. Am i missing something?
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
Can't think of anything else sorry. I would try a dif HD if you havn't already. Hope you sort it soon mate.
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
I think it might well be your CPU, whilst the Athalon's were designed as 64bit processors, I doubt very much that Microsoft put a lot of time optimising code for them.
My advice would be to pick up an X2 for your system and run with that.
Re: What can i do about Visa 64 running like a dog?
What a dork!!!
I have only set power management option to power saving mode, which limits the CPU to 50%.
Running nicely now. I can believe though that no one (not just here) thought of that. Oh well, happy now.
Still going to pick up an cheap X2 though :)
EDIT: Opps, i see scrandman did indeed mention it. If i head read properly, i would have saved a good few hours messing around.

Eh? Check the second reply to your original post, by scrandman...
edit: Ah... you've finally seen it :)

He was running XP, and upgraded the machibe to Vista, and experienced 'dog-like' performance. When chatting about it I simply suggested he revert to XP to see what resulted, and he did and he reported the performance improvement. He has remained with XP.
I am sorry I don't have detailed information, but might be able to quantify it - He did have some firm grounds for his findings, and may still have some detail - however feel free to snipe away to your hearts content, and enjoy your Vista.
