    PC Hardware Question

    Hi there all,

New to this so excuse me if I lack detail in my first attempt.

Im in the process of upgrading the RAM on my PC and I would like to know what and what isn't possible.

I have to memory sticks currently installed in the only two available ports/sections. The memory sticks are 2 x SDRAM PC 133 T266Meg.

In summary I have have half a gig. I would like to significantly increade this. Are there limits or restrictions as to what I can install i.e. can I purchase 2 x 1GB SDRAM PC133 memory sticks or am i just restrcited to 2 x 512 sticks?

How do I find out what I am limited to as I dont what to purchase anything to then find out it wont work.

    Hope you can help!!!

    Many thanks,
    Tom

    Re: PC Hardware Question

You will be limited by the motherboard, so you need to find the model and make of that and then people should be able to provide you with better information.

    Re: PC Hardware Question

I think you can buy PC133 512mb memory sticks but not 1g ones.

Check your motherboard manufacturer as to what your mobo can take. That is if they still have info on your mobo as it is very old technology these days!!

    Re: PC Hardware Question

Some older motherboard like the i815ep does not support more than 512MB of memory, so you may not be able to do any upgrade at all.

Of course if you're using other chipsets there might be hope.

I don't know if anyone still sell new 512MB PC133 sticks though.

Try running CPU-Z and check what motherboard chipset you are using?

    Re: PC Hardware Question

Quickest answer. Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com

Use the memory scanner there and it'll tell you what your likely replacement options are. One thing to watch out for on some of the older boards is that they can be tempermental with regards to low or high density RAM (i.e. whether you have 8 or 16 blocks of memory on the chip), make sure you buy your RAM from somewhere reputable so you can RMA it easily under the Distance Selling Regulations.
