Overclocking....

Hi, ive just overclocked my q6600 go to 3.2 ghz, on stock voltages My temps are low 40's idle and 75 at load.
I have a couple of questions,

1. My temps are Core 0= 67 (load) Core 1=66 (load) Core 2=76 (Load) Core 3=75 (Load)
I have re applied the thermal compound and made sure that is is all evenly spread out, but my temps still vary between cores, why?

2. how much increase could i get by raising the voltages before i hit 80 do you reckon?

Not a problem mate

I really wouldn't push any harder than that. 70 degree's is my upper limit when i'm overclocking.

The variation could be lots of things. Slightly concave/convex chip or HSF base... or just the way the cookie has crumbled with the chip you got.

Is that with a stock heatsink? You really don't want it that hot under load.

Properly lapping both the heatsink base and CPU heatspreader apparently evens out the core temperatures. Although, you can expect different core temperatures depending on what is loading the cores in the first place. For instance, if a core is regularly stalled whilst waiting for e.g. a system RAM read to complete, it won't run as hot.

I agree. That cooler should be keeping the CPU at a much lower temperature, especially at stock volts. What other fans are you using in your case?

Was just going to ask if you had more case fans. Got my Q6600 at 3Ghz at load in Prime i got 65, 65 56, 56 on the cores.

Using the Thermalright ultima 90 with a sharkoon 120 fan.

there was a threat just a day or 2 ago about applying thermal paster. i think the arctic silver website had a description of bext application depending on whether its a solo, dual or quad core. straightforward and with pics so its very clear. sorry i dont have the link but it's here somewhere, i think it was comparison between thermal compounds.

also consider lapping to flatten the surfaces - knocks 5-10 degrees off!
