    New components and XP

My MESH PC has died. Tried the suggestions from my previous thread, but no joy.

I want to put in a new m/board, RAM, PSU(if necessary) and cpu, but keep everything else – HD, DVD, floppy drive, gfx card.

At the moment XP Pro is loaded on the HD.

If I install all of the new stuff will things be OK, or will the copy of XP on the HD recognise that the m/board and cpu have changed and refuse to work?

I have the CD with XP on it (a recovery CD not a full copy of XP) that I got when I bought the PC from MESH.

Does anyone know if I can use this CD to reformat the HD or am I going to have to buy a new copy of XP (or even Vista)?

    TIA

If you take a new mobo and have an OEM XP then it will want reactivating. If you ring and tell them that your last mobo died they might be OK to reactivate. They did with me, but mine was just a later rev. of the same board.

It may just point blank refuse to install if it doesnt recognise it is a mesh system, dell cd's do that, although I doubt mesh are big enough to have that sort of system. You will probably therefore be able to install it but reactivating it will require phoning microsoft, who will do something between reactivating without question, requiring persuasion and point blank refusal.

    Re: New components and XP

The mesh's i've dealt with come with a standard OEM copy so it will be as in post #3.

I've never had a problem swapping a motherboard on an OEM copy as long as the old one is dead

Try to repair the windows install and see if that works.
