Reuse my old Raptor HDDs or buy new?
I'm starting to get some concerns about reusing my old Raptors in my new system. I have 2 x 74GB Raptors purchased around 3 years ago so they've had a good life so far. They have worked well in my current system but are extremely noisy. I'm putting together half of ym new system this weekend and completing the job next weekend. That gives me time to consider purchasing new HDDs instead of reusing the Raptors.
The case is an Antec P182 and i'd rather have quietness traded for some performance.
If I were to buy new HDDs then what do you guys recommend? I'll be putting Vista 64 on them if that matters. Also, is it better to go for two separate HDDs or just one with Vista 64? I don't store much data on my drives (I have two 400MB external USB-connected drives for archiving stuff off).
Re: Reuse my old Raptor HDDs or buy new?
It would be better to have two drives but not by much.
Partitioning wouldn't be a bad idea either but like you I always keep my main drives quite tidy without much rubbish on them and so I just use one drive no partitions. :)
Western Digital AAKS are on scans today only and they in the p182 are silent. Not quiet clicks.. silent :)
You can get drive silencers for the raptors but i'm not sure how effect they are and then they have to be in 5.25" bays rather than the normal 3.5" ones.
I would just get a western digital 500GB AAKS and sell the raptors as they get you enough to buy the WD with change.
Re: Reuse my old Raptor HDDs or buy new?
Strange, as i have two raptors in a p180 and I myself cant hear them. Spose its one of those subjective things.
If your looking for something new I'd def say go WD. I've had loads of maxtors go down on me, seagate from what I have read are noisy. I did rebuilt a mates PC with two samsung 500Gb's and again both have gone down........ Where as the WD's in my system have been solid from day 1.
