why does my computer disconnect from the internet?

Hi.

For a while now my computer has been randomly disconnecting from the internet, i have tried to sort it but the problem just remains. It only disconnects sometimes and after varying lengths of time.

I have dial up 56k, with a Serial MicroLink 56k Fun II modem. I have run adaware and that doesnt pick anything up.

I thought maybe it could be people trying to phone the house or something?

Anyone else got any ideas to solve it, or what it is? as it is frustrating.

What version of Windows are you running? If it's 2000 or XP you could have the Blaster.exe virus. Search your hard drive for msblast.exe (iirc) and goto http://www.symantec.com/ to download the patch for it.

Failing that, it could be as you say people trying to call you. If you have call waiting on your telephone, it will interupt your modem and disconnect you. There is a way to diasble call waiting in the modem properties.

Blaster causes the system to shutdown, not disconnect from the net.

Could be a bad phone line ? , do you hear any noise on the phone for voice calls ?

Right, searched for msblast.exe and couldnt find anything. downloading patch now.

I dont get any noise, or distortion down the line, however sometimes when i disconnect my dads computer dials-up to the net....dont know if that helps.

Ill post results of this patch...still downloading, damn 56k

maybe you get disconnected because your dads computer is trying to establish a connection then??

Yeah they are, although there was a time when it didnt get disconnected even though they were one the same line...

So a new question: why would dads computer be dialing up (it isnt on a network, so not demand dialing..) he has norton 2000, that he updates about once a week...

Do you have call waiting enabled on your phone ?

Errr, im not sure. we have BT answer phone, where you have to dial 1571 to see if there are any messages, dont know if that is it?

If you are on the phone and a message gets taken , You usually hear a "beep" down the line.
This can be enough to disconnect the modem.

Check with BT for the correct *# code to switch this notification off.

Sounds like you've two separate problems - The net disconnection I'd put down to either BT call minder/Call waiting or your dads Machine. If you've a mobile phone, dial up the net, then using the mobile, call your home and see what happens.

The hompage Hijack sounds spyware related. Not a fan of adaware, much prefer Search and destroy , grab the updates for it too.
