Cheapest, quietest largish capacity PATA hard drive?
Hi all, request for some advice please....
Have built an Ubuntu box (mATX, Celeron 700, 384MB PC100, GeForce 2MX so it's a real flyer :)) but the hard drive is old, slow and loud (I think it's 4 to 5 years old, and about 20GB). I know it'll never be a super system, but i know the whole system will respond so much faster with a modern hard drive in, as well as being much quieter.
The system was a 'use spare parts only' idea so initially didnt want to spend even £1 on it, but am now willing to spend up to £30 on the hard drive.
Which hard drives of the 160GB to 250Gb range have only 1 platter? I want the fastest, cheapest, quietest performer :)
Cheers in advance

As HDs only recently got up to that sort of density, it unlikely that you'll find one with 1 platter at 160GB. The same applies to price. There is this - looks like the best of the bunch:
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

I use Samsung drives - they do seem pretty quiet.
Re: Cheapest, quietest largish capacity PATA hard drive?
Thanks for that. The P80 series appears to be pretty cheap, but is 2 or 3 generations behind their new T166 range, although Scan's T133 range starts at £45, so i guess i need to lower my sights a little.
i totally don't NEED the latest, but, well, you know....

You can get 160 single platters now fairly easily, for example:
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
(£31.83)
That one also has acoustic management.
Review of the SATA version of the same drive:
AnandTech: Western Digital WD1600AAJS: 160GB Served on Single Platter

Perfect, thank you
Edit: Am liking it

Now there I was trying to avoid the WD drives!
Re: Cheapest, quietest largish capacity PATA hard drive?
My 160GB PATA SP160N from a few years ago is significantly quieter than any other drive I've used, including two recent samsung spinpoints and a wd.
Re: Cheapest, quietest largish capacity PATA hard drive?
I'd backup the Samsung SP160N support. I have had two in the past and they are great. I only got rid of them due to sale of the machine they were in.
