    Re: comparisons between systems

the intel will crap on the amd, with poop

    the 8800gt blows the 7800gtx out of the water, and a fx55 can't compete with a 6600

    Re: comparisons between systems

It's criminal to stick DDR3 in that system

If the latter one had DDR2 then it'd be laughing all the way compared to the first one.

    Re: comparisons between systems

if this thread is a strange "old vs potential new pc" thread, id really reconsider getting a ddr3 mobo at the moment. £115 for 1GB is a joke, you can get 4GB of dr2 and have change left over.

either that or dig around for more money, only getting a gig would be a shame

    Re: comparisons between systems

its the excuse RAM manafacturers needed!

(Its been hard for them of late, too much competition, plenty of the flash side have been stung by the ramifications of the price fixing from yesteryear and also because so many people haven't realised that even 32bit vista will use the ram you throw at it, rather than leave it empty).

Course there is, but DDR3 is a silly route to go at the moment, as is 1GB of memory.

    Re: comparisons between systems

I wouldn't bother with DDR3. 2Gb of DDR2 PC6400 is £40 or less. You might also want to re-use that 74Gb raptor for the OS/apps/games and use the 160gb for storage.

    P.S. Will my 2008 £600 PC beat my 386? eleventy111one111!!!

    Re: comparisons between systems

The main point is, assuming this is an upgrade, do you need to? A few games might struggle with the 7800, but it's still a very capable set up. It's not something I'd upgrade for the sake of it, I'd upgrade if I felt it was necessary. The Intel set up would beat the AMD one hands down, but if you're not doing any CPU crunching of any description (video editing, some games, whatever), then there won't be that much difference.

If it's a choice between the 2, then get the Intel every time, but it desperately needs 2gb of RAM, as that's hopelessly imbalanced at the moment.

    Re: comparisons between systems

I agree, a very unbalanced system.

The Q6600 is way more powerful than any other component, you'll never get to use a quarter of its power. Try a core2duo and 2Gb DDR2 PC6400 RAM.

Its not the fastest part of the system that determines how powerful it is, but the slowest.

In the case of the intel system, 1Gb of RAM (of any kind) will be the weak point.
