    RDRAM - 512Mb sticks?

    Anyone know if you can get 512Mb sticks of RDRAM (PC1066, 16 bit)?

    Most stuff I've seen isn't clear so I'm not sure if you're getting 2x256Mb sticks or 1x512Mb.

    And what's a good price in the UK? (and where!) Some prices are astronomical - £200 (=$365!) so 1Gb would be over £400. Mad! And I thought OCZ Dual Channel Gold PC4000 was expensive...

    Be cheaper to get a non RDRAM mobo and some DDR ram instead m8.

    RDRAM was a failed experiment by intel, and now unfortunatly your paying the price for that faliure

    That page is very clear, but to be honest, for the price of two sticks you would be in igh end territory with a new mobo and with current ram prices a easy gig of memory on PC4000....

    If you really want some, have you checked out E-bay??

    There's no 512MBs at the moment, only things like this.

    But if you keep checking back, I'm sure some will pop up.

    Looked at eBay already, not much in the way of 512Mb sticks and I've only seen them in PC800 - don't want to take the performance hit.

    Best price I've seen so far is here : http://www.pc-memory-upgrade.co.uk/m...s-rdram-16.asp - an example of the unobvious 1 stick or 2 situation. They've good prices on PC4000 though, BTW

    Thought about doing some major mobo surgery already - in fact this is a Dell Precision 350 with a P4B 3.06 (533 fsb) in it and 1Gb of RDRAM - I just need more than that now! So was thinking to swap out 2 of the 256s (flog them on eBay like everyone else) and put in a pair of 512s taking it to 1.5Gb.

    I am in fact doing some major works already... 'cos its so noisy when it gets hot (running SETI 24x7) - poor ventilation, v.noisy PSU - I'm moving everything into an Antec SLK3700BQE case. Trouble is I'm replacing the mobo 'cos the Dells are so non-standard (ATX connection in this case) - got a new ASUS P4T533-C winging its way in from Thailand for £40!

    Still, if I did buy an 865/875 mobo I'd need a new CPU as my 3.06 is 533 so PC4000 would be totally wasted.... all adds up:

    quality mobo ~£100
    P4C 2.8Ghz ~£160 (run it at 250fsb so...)
    1.5Gb PC4000 ~£350

    Starting to look very expensive just for a memory upgrade

    You dont have to get a new CPU... just get PC3200 RAM instead and that'll give you some headroom to overclock!

    Board = £100
    RAM = £300 for 1.5Gb

    P4s can use the bandwidth of non-synchronous memory. AMDs can not.

    Hmmm hadn't thought of that... darn.

    Basic memory for a 533 bus would be PC2100 (133x4) no?

    So PC2700 (166) would allow a 25% fsb increase, and a 3.06 wouldn't go that high (3.825Mhz) on air anyway!

    Can you run 1.5Gb of dual channel RAM? ie 2x256 + 2x512? Thought I read somewhere that you should stick to the same size sticks in all sockets, and the same manufacturer too, esp when overclocking, no? Or is that a myth?

    Then again, wouldn't I be taking a fair performance hit going from the fast RAMBUS to PC2700?

    Probably, yes ... why don't you sell your current ram first and then see how much money you have got to spend on a new chip, mobo, ram and case ... the performance increase of overclocking say a P4C 2.4GHz to 3.3GHz with PC4000 memory on a decent i865/i875 board even with just 1GHz would be huge.

    PC1066 is fast at data transfer, but has a latency of approximately a week. DDR now outpaces RAMBUS, since speeds got to the level they have done.

    also RDRAM or rambus, requires 2 sticks the same size.
    AMD 64 3400, Geforce FX 5800, 2x 80GB HDD, ASUS K8V Deluxe, Kingston PC3200 1GB valueram.

    Agreed - RDRAM was impressiveley fast originally, but that was when we had PC2100 RAM runing at 266Mhz. Now weve got PC4000 or whatever running at 400Mhz+ RDRAM is defunct.

    shredisn@tdead - cut your losses, sell the RDRAM rubbish on ebay, and buy nice new soopafast low latency DDR (and watch your seti times drop)

    Yeah my Athlon 850 managed to beat a P4 2.4 running RDRAM, lol.

    either way, if i was you id go with whats been suggested DDR ! a lot cheaper, a lot faster and a lot more compatible
