Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
Personally I have no experience with quad cores but 80oC is too high in my books. I would be far happier at the 65oC mark.
Probably worth checking the cooler is properly seated and that the fan is actually spinning :P May be worth taking the cooler off look at the heat spreader and heatsink if the are any patches without AS5 then you know that was your problem. Clean it all off and reapply and try again :)
Did you follow Arctic silver's directions on how to apply AS5? A horizontal line for quads allowing the HS to spread it out for you.
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
I suspect something might be wrong with your heat sink installation. I've just built a new rig around a Q6600 and clocked it to 3Ghz, after 15 minutes of ORTHOS I'm only getting temperates of 36 degrees reported by Speedfan and aBit uGuru.

I don't like the "Heatsink spread it for you" approach.. I did just take it off and there were some "dry" patches on the heatsink, I have applied more and am now running Prime again. 57C we are at atm about 5 minutes in which is alot better as about 5 minutes in we were at 60ish
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
Lucio - try installing Core Temp (the latest beta i think its 0.95.4) to monitor your temps as I imagine it will report them to be 15oC higher than Speed fan etc. Its to do with the base line for the thermal diode on the cpu, the newer chips have it at 100oC while the older ones at 85oC and if I understand correctly it doesn't measure a temperature but rather a difference from the baseline hence the inconsistencies.
But still your going to be only at ~50oC rather than 80oC
The easiest way to check is to see what idle temps you get if they are less than ambient then you know its reporting the wrong temperature (assuming you don't have a TEC or phase change cooler).
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
OK, after another 15 minutes we are at 62C and it keeps dropping to 61, 60, 59. I'd say its stable at those temps now, which are nice temps, and I am happy with them. I'll leave to use more thermal paste first time in the future.

What you're seeing is the "case temp" of your CPU. As someone has already said, install CoreTemp 0.95.4 and you'll get the temperature of each individual core. They are normally 10-15 degrees hotter than the case temp when under load. Still gonna be a low temperature. :)

Running 64bit Vista, Core Temp wouldn't load at all thanks to lack of signed drivers. Still, all told tempertures inside this case are as good as they've been reported and I found the zalman thermal grease as piece of cake to apply.
Tempted to increase the overclock on this chip a bit further, though thus far it doesn't seem to need it :)

Use Everest then. Speedfan reports about 10C too low. Uguru is even worse in my machine. It reports 15C+ too low.
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
CoreTemp is definatly the way to go. Core Temp

Is that just with the new core2duo cpus or all cpus? Certainly never heard of speedfan being 10c off before and I use it.
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
It's common knowlege that speedfan reports temps usually 10-15c below what they actually are.
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
I think i may have the answer,
In the BIOS, have you changed the cpu voltage to the lowest voltage and keep increasing until you have reached the lowest stable voltage?
Re: Q6600 @ 3Ghz temp check
Speedfan gives me the same temperatures as CoreTemp, Everest, and Intel TAT.
On a C2D.

Hi Lucio, I had the same problem with CoreTemp until I found some instructions on how to get it running under Vista 64. It works great! You do have to run a .bat file to load the driver before running the executable.
Take a look here on how to get it working:
Getting Coretemp to work in Vista X64! - Erodov, Inc - The Knowledge Vault!
I hope that helps!

Sounds like another case of intel's wonderfully "flat" heat spreader
