    Old system - worth salvaging?

I'm not sure what to do with what remains of my old system. It was faulty (motherboard) and I have taken some bits out for my new system.

    This is what remains:

    - Thermaltake Tsunami case - still in very good condition

    - Tagan 480W Whisper PSU - I guess it's still fine

    - nVidia GeForce 7800GT graphics - I think it's one of those pre-overclocked BFG jobs

    - LG DVD-Writer (IDE interface)

    - 2 x 1GB DIMMs (DDR)

The motherboard/CPU/HSF will be binned as the motherboard is faulty and the CPU (Athlon 64 4000+) has thermal compound spread like jam all over it and this has leaked all over the pins).

All the bits are three years old apart from the DIMMs and video card. So, is it worth doing anything with this or should I just bin it?

Re: Old system - worth salvaging?

With a little bit of effort you could probably salvage the CPU, the case/psu/gfx/ram would probably be worth selling. DVD writer I would keep as a spare, as the price of them has just fallen through the floor.

Someone will probably still buy the CPU/mobo - sell them on ebay as faulty

Best to sell IMO rather than build a new system.

    Details on the RAM please.

that's really depressing... your "old system" is my current one, pretty much, and you're all talking as if it's steam powered

Ah, well, another 20 years: I'll have paid off the mortgage, son'll have moved out of the house, maybe I'll be able to afford an upgrade then.

Sell the lot or build and HTPC. You can use isopropyl alcohol to clean all the TIM off the cpu. No point throwing away a perfectly good cpu. I'm sure if you advertised in the classified section you'd get some replies.

Re: Old system - worth salvaging?

I can't be bothered with selling the bits from my old PC. I just haven't got the time. I'd rather donate it to a fellow Hexite or bin it if nobody is interested. If anybody wants to collect the remains of my old PC for FREE then PM me. This consists of:

    - Thermaltake Tsunami case - working
    - 2 x 120mm Luxotop R120L silent case fans - working
    - Tagan Whisper 480W PSU - working
    - Asus A8V-E Deluxe motherboard (presumed faulty)
    - Athlon 64 4000+ CPU (works but is smeared with too much thermal paste)
    - Spare Ahtlon 64 3500+ CPU (again, works but smeared with AS5 thermal paste)
    - LG GSA-4120B DVD-RW drive - working
    - Thermalright XP-90 heatsink with 92mm Akasa Amber Case Fan - working
    - 2 x 1GB Corsair XMS3200 memory sticks (part no. CMX1024-3200C2PT) - working
    - BFG 7800GT PCIe graphics card - working

The whole lot still assembled in the case for free. Perhaps someone can make use of the parts or build a new system from them? No timewasters. You'll need a big boot or back seat and be able to collect this weekend from the Middlesex area or the whole lot gets binned. You'll need to bring photo ID with you that shows your name and address to prevent weirdos turning up! PM me if interested.

I'll pay for the ram/graphics if you wouldn't mind posting it...
    Can't collect though

It IS worth selling this lot you know, you will get at least £150 for the individual bits!

Those bits must have cost a fair penny a couple of years ago and you are just giving them away !!

Why doesn't anyone I know offer me free stuff like that??!!
The most I ever got was a 16x DVD rewriter!!
