Power & Parts Question

Hi guys, i recently posted a thread asking about suggestions for part for a new PC. Anyways my budget changed so i made up a new spec.

what i wanted to ask was - will this power supply be enough to keep the system sweet? im thinking it's borderline...

i ordered today:-

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz Socket LGA775, 8MB, BOXED w/fan

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

SO...its a 380w power suply unit in the case, with those componets...and i will definatly use my old keyboard & soundcard with all that...and possibly another old IDE hard drive, 2 old 8cm cooling fans and maybe a floppy drive.

The case also comes with a 12cm Fan.

I doubt i will be doing any major overclocking etc? and also do these specs seem ok? parts wise...(i know its a bit late seeing as i've ordered already)

any help much appreciated!

The PSU in there should be sufficient the earthwatts PSUs have received good reviews, if you feel you need a bit more power (or want to ensure reliability) then you will be looking at about £40-£60 to get a decent supply in the 500w region Corsair HX520w is a good modular supply comes in at ~£60 or the corsair VX450w which is not modular is ~£45 (if I remember correctly), the are plenty of other makes and models in the price range feel free to ask back here to make sure your not considering buying something sub-standard.

ahh! those were a few of the power units i was thinking about buying before i changed my system spec.

i'll see how it goes with this one for now, and if i possibly need to upgrade later i'll defo look more in to some of those you've mentioned and ask in the future if im in doubt.

Im still abit confused on this...i thought it should be ok, but i saw this link on another forum:- eXtreme Power Supply Calculator v2.5 and its calculating i should have around 466watts or there abouts :-(

is there any programs i could run on the system once i built it that lets me know the exact power consumption?

if any one could still help me, or give an opinion on this question that would be appreciated.

ok - i made a mistake in that calculator app and put my down my mother board as 4 sockets. now its only saying i need a minimum of 300 watts.

Did you also remember to spec the newer G0 stepping Q6600 if not then that is another 30W you can take off as the new one runs at 95w while the older revision ran at 125W.

Either way that PSU should be sufficient but as you appear to be really thinking about it a lot I would probably get a different one then at least your mind would be at rest As I suggested before the Corsair VX or HX ranges are good and come with a 5 year warranty the HX have the advantage of being modular which is advantageous in a smaller case but they are more expensive, as a result. Also worth noting that if you get 25 posts on here then you can get free delivery on orders from Scan so that will reduce the cost a bit

Don't change the PSU. What you've got will run perfectly. Unless you're paranoid and want to spend more money.

ohh thanks for helpign me clearing that up, reason why i may seem abit obssesive is because its my brotherrs parts, i just wanna make sure its all running for him.

hmm the modular ones sound good tho (as this is a small case), in case of future upgrades.
