My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

My Linksys WRGTS Wireless Router keeps locking up on me, whenever I leave my laptop alone downloading something (a large file like a game patch, or even a Torrent file).

Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can avoid this please?

If I make a wired connection, it's normally fine, but my router is hidden away, so this option is less than ideal.

I don't mind buying a new router if I need to. I have seen this deal, does anybody of any experience of that router please?

    Thanks

    Russ.

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

Netgear DG834s are the best (home use) ADSL routers I have come across. I'd suggest an DG834GT (I'm guessing you don't need N speeds).

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem though please?

I guess its pointless to replace it if the problem persists.

I have two wireless laptops, and a wired desktop.

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

when you say it stalls/locks up, do you mean the router crashes, or your wireless internet connection just stops working?

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

The usual cause is that torrents and P2P applications try to open more connections than the router can cope with so it runs out of memory and crashes.

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

Some routers are quite sensitive to inbound connections and causes what seems like a buffer overflow. Cisco routers are notorious for this. I haven't had any good experiences with Linksys routers, but I have no experience of your particular router.

However, your problem is more about the wireless connection than the internet connection, so not sure. What kind of wireless security are you running? Is the problem still there if you turn the security off?

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

I have tried removing the security, but it makes little difference.

Shall I just try a different router?

Fraz - its freezes completely and requires me to turn off the power to it. The Vista wireless logo changes to the exclamation mark symbol.

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

Maybe look if there is a newer version of the firmware you can put on it before giving up on it?

Re: My Wireless Router keeps stalling/locking up

Have you checked to see whether one of the WRT-based firmwares would work on your device? I run DD-WRT v23 SP2 on both of my Broadcom-based routers (an old Fon-supplied WRT54GL and a Buffalo WBR2-G54S) and it works really nice. The Tomato firmware (another WRT-based firmware), if it's compatible on your router, has some really nice Web UI-based bandwidth statistics which update in realtime, I'm going to try installing that on one of my routers but I can attest that with DD-WRT, and a little trivial configuration, both my routers work really nicely.
    I like ellipses...

They sound promising - do you have a link to them please?

    Thanks
