What's a PWM and how do I cool it??

Ok, so I realise that the aBit uGuru panel isn't the most accurate temperature monitoring tool, but when it's reporting my CPU as 17 degrees and my PMW is reporting 52 degrees even I can tell somethings not working properly.


I suspect it's due to the case design as there's a dead spot of airflow right by the back edge of the case and if the PWM is what I think it is (largeish heatsink by the CPU socket) then there's very little airflow getting to it, despite the additional fan on the side.


Any suggestions on how to get some more air to it?

Yup, its that heatsink :)

PWM is basically power regulation.
More airflow? Stick a fan by it, its about your only option :)

Don't know why the CPU is off by so much, uGuru is normally better than the normal readings (although not 100% accurate, granted) - try updating the BIOS.

Noticed the same thing on my friends new ip-39 build, CPU is reported as 15c :O_o1: and the PWM is in the high 40's

I know the Scythe mine is a good cooler but it's not a refrigerator.

And yes we updated the BIOS and motherboard drivers.

You could always make a fan shroud to direct some of the air from the 120mm rear case fan over it, as the Lian Li PC-A05 draws air in from the back and the PWM heatsink should be just infront of it.

EDIT: Or cut a small hole in the bottom of the case and mount a 80mm point at it ;)

PWM temps of 52C are nothing to worry about.
PWM is often the hottest thing on the mobo.

As for the CPU temps what I think is happening in your case is that you have Tcasemax 100C CPUs but the board thinks that they are 85C Tcasemax so that it's 15C out.

And if it's not causing problems you're not losing out anyway.

By the way, unless you've got 2 sweaters on, are shivering profusely, are running a TEC, have a plentiful supply of liquid nitrogen or your front side bus stretches to Lapland, then your CPU temp is being reported incorrectly anyway, rendering all the reported stats pointless.
