Which memory?!

Bit confused about all this memory!

Motherboard is an Asus G8KN-E

I know the memory is ddr2, but whats all this 5300, 6400+ etc business? lol. Also is it better to get 1 x 2gb, or 2 x 1gb?

Please can someone be a legend, and provide me some links to some good memory packages that will work with my motherboard? Either off ebuyer, scan, or ocuk. Or any other reliable site! Looking to spend about £40 inc delivery.

PC-5300 etc. refers to the speed. Without going into great detail, as far as DDR2 is concerned PC-6400 is the sweet spot, allowing you to overclock most processors without playing around with the memory:FSB ratio. PC-5300 is OK for most non-OC situations, but is only marginally cheaper.

Geil is a decent make. I, like many others her, like Crucial Ballistix, due to both its superb support and being part of Micron, the premier memory chip maker.

But yeah, PC6400 with a cas around 5-5-5-12 or 4-4-4-12 is pretty good. 2 GB's standard these days, and a matched pair is good if you have dual channel on your mobo. As for recommendations...

Corsair XMS, 2 x 1 GB, TWIN2X2048-6400 won a shootout in a mag i skimmed through in smiths a few days ago, think it was based on price as much as anything else though, which ain't a surprise as it's cheap cheap cheap...

Many thanks for your help so far! understand a bit better now. Read some reviews, corsair dont appear to be too good? Found some OCz 2gb 7200 on aria that looks good:

Both those are good options, the Special ops especially. However, unless you have overclocked your motherboard (and I'm gessing not) you won't actually get a benefit from the faster memory.
Choosing an 800MHz (6400) 2GB kit with fast timings (4-4-4-12) will net you more benefit.

If you are overclocking then the 900MHz OCZ kit will rock

Ordered the special ops kit.. as it costs alot more on other sites! £100 on ebuyer.. One more left in stock if someone wants it!

PC is OC'd from 1646.00mhz to 1760.00mhz if that helps.

Have 3 slots for memory on my mobo. Currently have 2 x 512mb

When I fit the 2 x 1gb sticks, would it be better for the pc to have one of my 512mb sticks remaining in the 3rd slot?

Also when fitting.. Is it a case of putting the clock speeds back to standard.. then turning the pc off.. fitting in new memory.. then just starting up?

I've never heard of that mobo (G8KN-E), and 3 memory slots seems rather unusual. Can you confirm the model number?

I ordered 2 x 2GB kits of GeIL memory (total 4GB) for my Vista 64 rig using an Abit IP-35 Pro motherboard. I've not had a single problem with it and have it running at 4-4-4-12 timings in dual channel mode (that's all four sticks) at a low 1.8V. A 2GB pack will set you back just £37.59 from OcUK:

Was thinking of the GeIL ones, as I saw some very good reviews.. but the OCz kits looks like its already been overclocked from 800mhz to 900mhz i think? Dont really need much more myself. Just to run pro evo 2008 right without so much lag lol

I'm afraid that all the advice so far is fairly useless, as this is a socket 754 motherboard. That takes DDR rather than the DDR2 we've all been talking about. 754s didn't run dual channel IIRC so you can just add another stick. so yeah, the advice above sucks. you want some PC3200 / DDR400 ram. which is unfortunately more expensive. on the plus side, distance selling regulations rock! otherwise you could always sell the ocz on ebay as, so long as you got them cheap, it should go for a little more on there

and one more thing...

that only applies to intel processors, amd 64s can take full advantage of memory clocked at speeds higher than fsb (though what difference you'll see depents a lot on what you do).

The Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 processors are somewhat different in architecture. In their case, the memory controller is integrated on to the processor itself, so there is no FSB that limits the bandwidth used -- the limit is the speed of memory that the processor itself supports. Currently this is DDR2-800 for current "K8" generation Athlons.

Will sell this set on ebay.. Cant believe that DDR costs more!! May just keep my 2 x 512mb and just add a stick of 1gb. Would this be ok?

Yes. That's probably your best option, short of getting a new mobo/CPU/RAM (which obviously costs a whole lot more).

fwiw, i ordered a 2x 2gb of patriot extreme ram for £129 quid the other day, which was an awesome price. If your board takes up to 8 gigs, i wouldnt waste money on single 1gb sticks nowadays ) However, in saying that the 1gb chips have dropped a shedload lately...
