    Question My First Shuttle (awww)

    Hi there,

I am just putting the specs together for my first shuttle, a small (and relatively cheap) gaming machine as I can't get an GeForce FX card in my work laptop! I would be very grateful for some feedback on my spec below and some advice as to what memory to use as its been about 5 years since I last built a pc!

    Shuttle SB61G2 P4 Mini Aluminium
    Intel® Pentium® 4 3GHz [800MHz] - (I assume I don't need a cooler?)
    1GB Memory - help!
Asus GF FX5700 V9570/256/TD 256MB - its all about the gfx card baby!
    80 GB Maxtor 7200rpm IDE ATA133
Samsung DVD Drive 16x Black OEM - don't need burner etc..

(Specs sourced from MicroDirect - although I am sure there are cheaper suppliers out there!)

    TIA

No cooler needed as Shuttle's have a very good heatpipe thang going on inside them to cool the CPU's down!

1GB memory? Probably go for Corsair or TwinMOS, they seem to be popular amongst the masses.

I would suggest against getting a GeForce FX card for a shuttle as some might not fit due to their size, but I may be wrong there! The 5700 doesn't look too huge so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Otherwise, nice looking setup (apart from the fact it's an Intel rather than an AMD! ).

you dont need a gig of ram - 512 is plenty for 99% of games you'll be running in the next year

£90 will get you a decent 160gb hdd which I would recommend as space is a premium in shuttles so might as well get a mid sized hard drive when starting out. Also I would also recommend against getting an nvidia graphics card, the ATI ones seem to perform much better, and you can pick up a 9600XT 2565mb card for £130 or a 9800XT for about £300 depending on how powerful you need to go

Don't start... been looking through Toms Hardware Guides - Intel still seems to have the edge imho.

Ah but what about next year? the specs seem to jump so fast, better to keep up now I reckon. Thanks for the komplette ref - I shall Google!!!

Anything to back this up - the tests on Toms Hardware seem like its a pretty close run thing, besides which I thought there were incomptabilities with some of the Radeon chipsets?

Thanks for all the help - keep em coming!!!

If the GF-FX fits its well worth getting as they do have less compatibility issues!

Why not instead of getting that shuttle and a P4, get the A64 and A64Shuttle, looks great, its cheaper and will perform better!

64-bit is still a bit of a scary commitment, sounds like marriage! Stick to proven ground for now I think, nforce2 platforms for AMD are brilliant and i875p Intel platforms are great too? I don't know much about Intel
