Do those boards allow for SLI? Im not sure why I am concerned about having the ability the SLI, it just always seemed like a way to have a reasonable upgrade path in 6 month or so, when the price of graphic cards drop.

yes they support sli, quad sli also on one of the x-38 boards i think plus they support the new cpus coming out down the line.

that one doesnt support sli, sli needs sli enabled boards whereas crossfire needs just 2 x pci-e x16 slots to work. i got a asus p5k-e and thats an sli board and its the p35 chipset too. don't worry about thread hijacking

How much cheaper is normally the angle I look at things (then again, it also results in very different view regarding the GT to the OP). Are there any reviews that directly compares the G92 GTS and the GTX?

The reviews I've seen so far only compares the GTS with the GT. I reckon that the GTS will actually outperform the GTX until it's held back by it's memory in comparison to the GTX (both in amount and bus width). This could happen at very high resolution gaming and games with particularly large texture. For everything else, the GTS should have an edge, with the higher clock both in the core and stream processors [educated guess - till I see actual comparison].

IF that was the case, I would actually go GTS - not because I do not value high resolution gaming but because I reckon that 512MB is actually enough for 1900x1200 in games that would actually run decently at that resolution. I reckon that games that would require more than 512MB at that resolution would require more of everything else too, and though the GTX may be faster, it would ultimately not be at the performance I would be satisfied with (the 8800GTX could have 2304MB of memory and Crysis with everything maxed would still run poorly - even if in percentage term, it may be quite a bit faster than the 768MB version at the highest resolution.

Definately a sli mobo, not sure if it is the right chip set. I think I will bite the bullet tomorrow in regards to buying my pc. I am aware there is new chips coming out in the not too distance future. However, I want to use the pc over the xmas period (free time ) and im fairly sure this will meet and exceed my requirements for the future.

well if the 680i chip is your fave, then go for it. its not a p35 board but hey if you need a pc for christmas i suppose get it. or wait until morning, when guys like staffsMike are awake to give some advice too.

StaffsMike suggested the mobo in my initial spec, he certainly has good knowledge, but p35 boards sound good to ahhhhh. I may try and overclock, so a mobo good for doing that, upgradeable and affordable would be perfect

I am pretty much aimlessly picking motherboards, if you wouldn't mind giving me a full title I can do a search for that mobo and see if it is available from novatech.

That's interesting (but I am TN not TA ). Looks like I was off in thinking that the core and stream clockspeed would easily offset the lower memory bandwidth at lower resolution. It's true in a few cases (Supreme Commander, AoE, Crysis) and in some case slower at lower resolution and faster in higher resolution (Oblivion - weirdness), but for most FPS, the GTX still has an edge at all resolutions.
If I was to make a choice, I'd weight in power consumption and noise with the immediate saving the 8800GTX might provide (in the long term, power consumption may offset those savings).

you have to get an nvidia based board to get sli that means 650i or 680i for intel.

I would advise you to go with a P35 as they are the best for the money and for stability something like the abit IP-35 or pro is best imo. You probably shouldn't consider SLi.. i got a 680i board before i really researched but i'll never use it. waste of money

but yea, the gtx uses quite a bit of power. the review said the gts can be oced to 500gflops ( forgot which bus it was ) which is 44% faster than a gtx, although the mem doesnt clock as well.

In ALL the tests, it is a straight contest between the new GTS and the GTX.
The GTX is ALWAYS at stock.
When the new GTS receives a decent Overclock it just edges ahead.

However

As soon as the AA & AF are switch on, especially at higher resolutions, the GTX is on top.

Like i said, a good GTS (BFG/EVGA) is going for between £220-£250. An OEM GTX can now be had for £238 and i think that price may fall even further VERY shortly.
It makes the GTX excellent value dont you think especially considered a higher end GT is also at least £185

true, but doesnt the gtx run at higher temps than the gts? bah i've already ordered one. i prefer having 1 pci-e connector on a gfx card.
