    Os Hdd

Ignoring the Raptors and their access times, what HDD make for a good OS drive?

Must be quiet and fast (hence ignoring raptors).

I am thinking single platter drive(s) in the 250 to 320Gb range (and possibly in Raid0.)

    Any reccommendations?

Is this the right way to go?

Hey fizzy. I would say the WD5000AAKS would be your best bet. Here's a post I've made comparing them and some other drives:

Unfortunately I've only got one, but I've no doubt they would be lightening fast in raid0. I expect in the future if I get two I'll have first 1/4 of each for OS and then the rest can be data

Samsung are generally regarded as the fastest and coolest. Seagate have the best warranty, but run a little noisier and hotter. WD are also good - I have one. Eschew Maxtor and anything but the 32Mb cache Hitachis.

    Re: Os Hdd

What you want is the highest capacity single platter drive. These two drives have 250GB on a single platter. A siingle platter should be quieter, more reliable, cheaper & just as fast as the 1TB drives.

    Samsung HD250HJ
    Seagate ST3250410AS

Samsung have released a 1TB drive with 3 platters so next year there should be some single platter drives with 334GB capacity and performance to match.
