AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

I have just found thes program called AGEIA PhySX in my program start up and wonder what it was?

It looks like some kind of benchmarking program but i gotta be honest
I WAS DRUNK LAST NIGHT AND DONT REMEMBER PUTTING IT IN THERE!

Has anyone ever heard of this or shall i just delete it.

I did actually try it though and the bench mark in it (similar to on ATI tool but better) seemed really good.

    Any advice is smart...thanks

Re: AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

I've heard of lots of people doing weird things while they're drunk and waking up beside someone they've never seen before, but never a piece of software

Anyhow, Ageia PhysX is a Physics processing solution from Ageia, they have a PPU card for doing the calculations, but the drivers also have a software library for doing the same thing without it, it's used by a few games, like GRAW2 for e.g.

Hehe I'm not sure what's worse: the fact software has installed without you knowing about it, or that you just decide to run it anyway!

It comes with things like UT3 demo and so on.

Re: AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

It is a piece of software that those nice games companies love to shove in your face, that has no advantage unless you actually have the PHYSX card itself, which 90% of people don`t as it is pointless.

I have it on my pc at the moment, i think Gears of War put it there. I have uninstalled it on 2 previous occasions after other games have installed it for me. Would be nice to have the option NOT to have it and play the game, i don`t like applications on my computer that are totally uselessIf i owned a PHYSX card i would be justified, but i don`t. Can it not detect this on installation!!??!!???

It isn't useless, the software is still used in the game, the card is just hardware acceleration basically.

Re: AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

It installed itself (I don't remember being asked, but I am getting old now) on my pc with graw1. If it started up with the game I wouldn't mind so much but I find it very annoying that it starts up with windows.

Even when/if you uninstall the game, it still loads with windows, eating up resources untill you disable/uninstall it.

Re: AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

    I like it

It comes with quite a few games. First time I saw it, was with Two Worlds. I've never seen it install without me allowing it, and you can choose to not have it, but the game probably won't work properly. I don't see any reason to not install it anyway. Its safe enough.

I liked it because it has little tests in it where you can fire boxes at cloth and the cloth acts realistically, or fire boxes into water and watch the water splash realistically etc.

Re: AGEIA PHYSX - What is (and where has i t come from??

Acrobat, I would have little problem with it, except it loads on startup, why? It's rare that the first thing I'm going to do is play a game, or even play at all (unless I get the time, or slack off work) so why does it have to be loaded at all, untill I decide to play a game that requires it? This is odd behaviour, and not something that I have a lot of trust in.

I realise that some people don't have a problem with this, that's fair enough.

That's "only" the tray icon which loads, and which can be turned off. Nothing more.

Mine doesn't even load that =)

It's pretty none intrusive. I don't even need it anymore, because I completed Two Worlds, and yet I still left it on my system. No need to get rid of it, but I can just uninstall if I want it gone.

It's non intrusive. But I agree with the sentiments that installing software without asking you is particularly annoying.

Well, the software is required, so there is no way around it.
Doesn't matter if they are going to tell you or not.
And btw, does any software tell you that they are going to install copy protection software? I don't think so
