Eee PC on its way

I felt like ordering myself and Eee PC, for surfing the net, while i make my tea, or have a coffee while waiting for my Mrs to finish work!! Perfect little size, Great battery life and well it looks sweet!!

Should be arriving tomorrow!!

Not sure whether to put XP on it or not... i might just let it run with what it was made for!!

Anyone else got one?

Had any problems with it?

Overheating or any crashes??

Would like to know!!

What an interesting thing. I've just ordered a black one, although stock is not expected until next week (from Ingram Micro).

Get XP on it, VPN access to the office. What more do you need in a portable? Makes my 12" Dell look like a brick!

My flatmate purchased one of these on release, he got the black one which I think looks really good.
I still can't believe the size of it!
Hasn't had any problems with it overheating or crashing.
Not sure about XP but the version of Linux that comes with it is good, very easy to use and is perfect for surfing.
Battery life is about 3.5 hours. Screen is very nice except for the low resolution (a couple of websites look a bit funny as they require minimum of 1024x768 but most are fine). You can plug it into a monitor and it will pull nice high resolutions.

The only problem he said there was is that the SD card reader doesn't seem to support High capacity SD cards.

I often use it when I am in the lounge watching TV and can't be bothered to go upstairs to use my computer.

So for £220 you getting a tiny 7" laptop with only 4gb of flash disk space.

So who exactly is this marketed at? I mean if your need something small and convenient for writing/sending emails, who are mainly business people then why wouldnt you buy yourself a blackberry or something of the like, instead of this cheap worthless machine.

What else could one do on this, surf the web? On an 800px width. Probably text based websites, but thats about it.

Instead why not spend an extra £150 on a dual core 12", 1GB RAM, with Vista, machine.

And its $199 in America but over $400 in the UK, definitely not worth it.

Linux runs perfectly and is well suited to the Eee PC.

It's a good machine to carry around with beacuse of it's size and weight (less than 1 Kg I believe).
You obvioulsy didn't read my post as I said that most (nearly all) websites I have tried work perfectly with it so I don't understand where you got this 'it will probably only run text based websites', as an example I have used it on this site before with no problems. The few websites that didn't work perfectly had only minor formatting problems.

A blackberry doesn't really compare to the Eee PC.

Trust me a dual core, 120GB HDD, a whole 1Gb of RAM, extra 5 inches, optical drive, network adapter, and VGA port are worth an extra few hundred! Even if it is at the cost of an extra 1KG, which is hardly a load of weight.

But i guess those with low cash flow would find it an attractive deal, like students etc.

I think you're missing the point, this product is aimed at the PDA user who wants something just a little bit bigger, but doesn't want the hassle of carrying a full sized laptop around. If you've never had a need for a PDA or similar device, then you probably won't see the need for this product either.


Personally I wonder what it'd be like getting one of these, plus say a USB Digital TV tuner, and I'm sure there's a way somehow you can copy DVD's onto a 4GB flash card to watch them on the unit as well.

Surely if your just writing emails, documents, surfing etc then you don't need a dual core with 120GB hdd, 1 gig of ram and Vista. Especially as it's almost double the price.

The Eee PC comes with a VGA port so you can connect it to a monitor and it will pull nice high resolutions, also has wifi and a network adapter.

Viewing websites is perfectly fine on the Eee PC except for the odd few that have minor formatting problems. When I first heard about the screen resolution I was a bit doubtful but when I actually used it I was suprised how useable it is.

It really comes down to what you want in a laptop, what you intend to do with it and (like you said) how much money your willing to spend.

btw - I never had a problem with switching over from 2000 to XP.

Lucio - you could use the built in player smplayer (based on mplayer) which will play DivX and XviD, you would just need to convert the DVD's.

@masscrazy - it depends what you need a portable for. I only use mine when off-site, and then only to check email on Outlook (rather than on my Windows mobile phone) and write customer site notes in Word. So for me, rather than carrying 2 kilos of laptop plus another 0.5 kg of spare battery, this will save me a lot of weight.

And beleive me an extra 1kg is a lot of weight when you travel around a lot.

And with that opener you just lost the respect of your fellow man. Find me an ultra compact weighing less than a kilo and the size of a hardback novel for similar money? Can't? Ahh.. That's the point then, yeah? I've already got a fattop at home!

Surfing is great - just hit F11 in Opera/Firefox and you've got plenty of screen space to read *any* website. Incidentally, do install Opera if you get one it seems much faster/less buggy (JAVA vnc sessions break firefox for some reason).

It's a toy - a bit of fun - but surprisingly practical - and everyone i've shown it to wants one too, which says something doesn't it? I'm obviously not going to change your deeply entrenched belief that you know better here - but sometimes (despite what the girls may say to you) size is everything
